A few things I’m confused about, these will probably sound petulant but I sincerely don’t mean them that way:
1) I believe I follow every Av who has an IG account and I don’t remember seeing Landy in any of the Halloween clips posted let alone shots of him jumping around. I could be forgetting one or didn’t notice but I watch most of that stuff because I’m a pretty lame fan.
2) Why the shock about him being hurt? As soon as I heard the news my my first thought was, well that explains that. Rudo spent a decent chunk of his last review saying he’s basically looked pretty bad in his last four games and terrible in two of them and just hasn’t looked right. I thought the same, particularly the Anaheim game where something definitely seemed to be wrong. Near elite players don’t just suddenly forget how to be near elite.
3) Wilson didn’t seem ‘forgettable’ in the Tampa game. I thought he was at least the second best guy on the ice.
4) I will reiterate what I wrote at the top, I’m confused by this and honestly don’t understand it: How the hell does Friedman find out about Landy being injured before anyone locally? I can sort of understand him knowing about the 96 signing before anyone because maybe he knows Liut really well or something but this was just weird to me.
1. Zadorov’s wife’s IG is the one where he was boppin around with the rest of the team
2. Because there’s usually indications of injury somewhere. Just because a guy is playing poorly doesn’t mean he’s hurt. In hindsight it might help explain some of it but even then it’s a stretch to blame poor play solely on injury. Somehow he suffered a significant injury at some point (we don’t even know when!) and it’s taken until the last 48 hours to diagnose it? Everything about it is just weird.
3. Tampa game was great. 3 assists that night. The other 8 games? 1 assist. What is it about a body of work that seems so easy to ignore in light of one good game?
4. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of how the industry works. Especially in regards to an organization like the Avalanche are so notoriously tight-lipped about their in-house business. Which very much adds to the odd timing and release of the news about the injury.

On Wilson I would never contend that he’s been a star over his first 9 games but for me his performance in Tampa moves him out of the realm of forgettable – I guess simply because I immediately thought about that game.
If you’re thinking that Landeskog’s injury is sudden and weird than I do also, especially in light of Alex Zadorova’s video (which I guess I saw but must not have noticed Landy) and am duly concerned. I really hope it wasn’t another Barrie-wrestling-at-the-WC’s type thing.
On your last note, I agree, I very likely have a fundamental misunderstanding of how that stuff works, I only see what’s reported and some of the things that you guys mention. I’ve definitely seen and heard how tight lipped the Avs are. None of that gets to how a guy in Toronto (albeit a very famous and obviously connected guy in Toronto) tweets out that Landeskog has an injury before anyone in Denver does, especially after the same thing happened with the same guy regarding Rantanen’s contract. I’m not trying to poke at anyone or trying to imply that anyone isn’t doing his job. I just don’t get it and simply saying I have a fundamental understanding of the industry doesn’t help me get it.
How a national guy like Elliotte who knows everyone under the sun gets something like that before local guys is one of those things we could have an hours-long conversation about. Just how things work and how guys who have been around a long time operate. And Elliotte is also incredible at what he does and I’d never try to take anything away from him. He’s the man for a reason, you know? But in the age of information, all it takes is a text. Where that text goes to, well, just hope you’re the guy who gets on that particular day. Haha.

Gotcha. Yep he’s good and yet still humble enough that he’ll defer to local guys like Dater. And I’m not forgetting that you’ve had a few of those nuggets like Karlsson to SJ, the Avs signing Bernier, Calvert, Donskoi, some others I’m probably forgetting, knowledge of some injury prognoses as well the info you brought back from the 2017 draft about scouts and GM’s view of Duchene’s second half and WC’s that was causing Joe to have a problem dealing him.
We all have wins and losses on our record. That’s the job haha. Elliotte is just aces. I would say, though, that it’s very rare for a national guy to scoop an Avs injury because of how they normally go through the process. The bizarre timing of this Landeskog one opened the door for him to sneak in and ninja it. What a business.

You guys mentioned the opportunities here for Bednar and Grubauer to lay early claim to some awards. The one I’m looking to is MacK. I know he wants to be the best player in the league, well here’s his chance to make a strong case for the Hart and Lindsay awards.
I also would have preferred to see Kaut called up and given a shot, even if it was just for a few games to give him a taste and then call up a more veteran guy for a longer term replacement.
With all of this center depth and the obvious desire to keep guys like Bowers, Jost, and Kamanev at that position when and who becomes expendable and for what price? Now that we also have Newhook likely two years away when is it time to fish or cut bait with some of these prospects instead of keeping them buried in the AHL?
Newhook is very much a problem for tomorrow. Hell so is Bowers. Bowers has been in the AHL for a grand total of like a month of his career so far. It’s not criminal that he isn’t first call-up right now. Of any of the call-up options, he’s still adjusting to the pro game because he has the least experience in it.
They have this year to really answer the Jost/Kamenev questions before they have to figure something else out. Kadri is also a man on a timer because he’s already 29 and while he has three years left on his deal, he’ll be at the age when it expires where you have to be careful. It feels like a lot of center depth now but it can go away very quickly. They need some solid answers on the guys of today before they need to start worrying about Bowers and Newhook (who isn’t even playing center at BC right now).

Bummer about the injuries, good thing we have depth this year. I agree about Kaut, give your top prospects some opportunity vs the likes of Megna and even Nichushkin. Could you go wrong with a fourth line of Kaut, Bowers and Kamenev just to see what is there? Maybe there would be a spark. The Avs don’t know what they have in these guys until they give them a real chance. Six to ten minutes per game if they are good. If it is a disaster after a couple of games, send them back or even trade Kamenev for a draft pick if possible instead of a potential waivers loss. We are going to see what this team is made of during this stretch.

Kamenev Bowers Kaut vs Kamenev Megna Nichushkin
Yeah there is some risk with rookie mistakes vs the “know what you are going to get” with NHL guys who have experience but are not part of the long term picture. I’d role the dice on the young guys, at least for a few games.
