Just a thought on your discussion of the depth at D and what to do with this potential excess. If Graves shows that he can be a solid #4-6 D over the first couple of months and Cole looks better than ever with his bionic hips (if that’s the case then I need to see his Doc about mine). In the best case scenario for this, Rosen and/or Timmins are tearing up the AHL with the Eagles and are trying to force their way onto the big club. If that situation develops, I would look at putting Z on the trade market where we could probably get a good return for him. If Graves is the real deal, I think he is probably better in most areas than Z and could then slot up to top 4 and pair likely with Makar (righty/lefty combo). That could end up having the group shake out as G/EJ, Makar/Graves, and Cole, Rosen, Timmins, and Barberio rotating through the 5/6 pair and Connauton as a solid black ace come playoff time or possible trade for than mid round pick at the deadline. Obviously, this is all hypothetical here, but if we’re looking to gain assets that will actually help down the road, Z is the piece that will probably get the most.
Given Z’s contract situation, I do think there’s a conversation to be had about him being the guy on the trade block as well. I just wouldn’t do during the season.
