“The truth is, BSN’s sources can confirm, that Altitude went to Haynes and asked him to go back to his old gig with the team, the radio play-by-play guy, and that current radio guy Marc Moser would replace him on TV.”

The timeline of events is getting muddy. In the podcast you say Moser beat out some names for the job. Were these people considered before Altitude asked Haynes and Moser to swap?

Moser was always the first choice, but Altitude did have something of an open window for others to express interest in the TV job. It wasn’t open very long, but I do know for a fact they considered some others before ultimately going with Moser.

Great interview show AD. I’m also confused though. Wasn’t BSN reporting a couple weeks ago that M Haynes was asked to go back to radio so that Moser could take the TV job for Altitude?

Yes, but Haynes refused and ultimately resigned.

yeah but… the earlier story made it sound as though the entire point for asking Haynes to take the demotion was to promote Moser because his rapport with McNab tested so well.

“The truth is, BSN’s sources can confirm, that Altitude went to Haynes and asked him to go back to his old gig with the team, the radio play-by-play guy, and that current radio guy Marc Moser would replace him on TV.”

“Tests by KSE convinced it of tremendous chemistry between Moser and McNab in the booth, where they have occasionally called games on radio together.”

Now it seems like the primary purpose was to move Haynes out if they considered other people. Surely you can see why several people are making the same point.

I feel really bad for Haynes, he didn’t deserve this and no one is even mentioning him in all these interviews with Moser that keep cropping up. No one even mentions who Moser is replacing, it’s like he never existed. He’s one of the coaches of my middle daughter’s summer 3×3 team – his son Kian is also on it – but I’m pretty sure no one is going to ask him about this. I sure as heck wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it. This whole incident will really tarnishes my view of the Avs. Moser is a good guy and I’ve always liked him but he’s not going to materially change the numbers on Avs broadcasts which I’m sure are almost entirely dependent upon their W/L record.

I’ve reached out to Mike several times for any comment, but have received no replies.

Before people get all riled up about this here are few things to think about. Altitude TV is a separate entity from the NHL team with it’s own separate managers who make the personnel decisions. They look at ratings, survey results and sponsor input amoung other things to arrive at their conclusions. It’s sort of the TV broadcasters’ version of analytics. And just like Sakic & Bednar they sometimes make changes to personnel. It’s a business and just like it is with players the decisions made do not always please everybody.

Yeah they are two separate entities that eventually roll up to the same owner and are very tightly coupled. The announcers fly on the team plane and the team and coach have a contractual obligation to work with the TV entity. The Avs are one of the few team in major sports that own their own broadcast outlets. We’re not dumb, we know how it works. Despite their “TV broadcasters’ version of analytics” – yes, we’ve all heard about ratings and surveys – the broadcast numbers are almost entirely driven by the performance of the team on the ice.

Haynes was the announcer for the Avs in one format or another from the first game until the 6th game against Nashville except for the period he was out dealing with a brain aneurysm. He’s been part of the Denver community in general and the Denver hockey community in particular since his time announcing the Grizzlies. And to my knowledge they haven’t even officially announced his ‘resignation’ just a comical “press conference” with Moser on the Vic Lombardi show announcing him as “the new voice of the Avs.” It’s a bullshit way to treat one of the most prominent media faces of the organization for 23 years and I don’t see how anyone can dispute that.

I’m not denying that it is being handled coldly but just saying it is a business decision on their part and those are rarely pretty. Their reasons are valid to themselves even though we may disagree or not understand. Transperancy would be nice but has never been a hallmark of this organization especially on personnel matters. I remember after John Kelly left they hired a guy named McCloud who turned out to be a disaster. Without any fanfare or announcement he just disappered and Haynes stepped into his place in the TV booth.

I feel bad for Haynes. He is a good guy and he certainly didn’t deserve this treatment any more than McNabb does. Now I want to see McNabb get heartlessly replaced by Rycroft. If they’re going to change it up, change it up.
