I actually don’t mind the trade for Berra. The Avs were going into the playoffs with a backup goalie who was questionable because of a back injury. They needed someone to be backup to the backup and none of the kids in Lake Erie were ready for it. And Berra really has shown some flashes. I get all that. It’s the three year extension that was bad news and that I can’t wrap my head around.

The need for a backup was fine. The choice, more importantly the cost of that choice, is what makes it such a difficult trade to swallow. They plucked a 27 year old who had been flat out bad on NA ice and paid a second round pick for him. That’s burning a high-value asset that simply didn’t need to be used. Giving up a legitimate asset while scraping the bottom of the barrel at a position makes the trade a bad deal.

It’s certainly a hit on Allaire (if it’s true that it was Allaire cheerleading for Berra). Hopefully Joe and Patty learned something valuable: Allaire, while being a great goalie coach, sucks as a pro scout. It sucks to lose the pick since that makes this an expensive lesson, but hopefully all of the pro scouting failures we’ve been seeing are ringing bells in the right places and we’ll see a desperately-needed upgrade in the Avs’ pro scouting department sooner rather than later. I’m starting to think that is the Avs’ biggest need at the moment (aside from a #2 defenseman, of course).

Allaire is a goalie coach. He needs to stick with coaching and let the personnel guys do their jobs. The trust in Allaire was clearly extended a bit in that situation but the team’s hiring of McFarland and stated intention of placing him in a role to make decisions regarding the NHL club should theoretically provide the additional buffer needed between decision-makers.

Yep. Although if pro scouting was so bad that they were hitting up Allaire for advice then it’s more on the org than him. I certainly hope the rumors of competency regarding McFarland are true. If so, I’d say that’s a good sign that Joe & Pat know about the problem and are taking steps to fix it. And _that_ would be welcome news indeed.

Given that the Guenin and Cliche extensions were “complete” and “total” failures of arguably the most important role of the front office, I would accept grades of F there.

Also, is there a reason there is nothing regarding Stuart?

Swing by tomorrow. We weren’t given the gift of Brad Stuart until year-two of the Roykic tenure.

AHA! Yes, “Year 1” in big bold font right there at the top. Not sure how I missed it. I blame flaviniods.
