It seems to me that the teams that win the “play in” playoffs will have a distinct advantage over the 4 seeded teams. This because they will have played a best of 5 with playoff rules for potential overtimes while playing for their playoff lives while the seeded teams play one game against each of the other seeded teams with regular season rules for overtime and virtually nothing at stake. The play in teams will hit the first round in play off mode both physically and mentally while the seeded teams will have to develop that on the fly.

To completely avoid even the appearance of home ice advantage (knowing the boards and bounces) why not have the Eastern teams play in Edmonton and the Western teams play in Toronto?

I’m super stoked on the thought of NHL players returning to the Olympics! It’s just not as fun without them (though it provided a nice showcase for the much more compelling Women’s tourney). One of my favorite Hockey moments was taking a road trip with my buddy to Salt Lake in ’02 to watch Finland vs Russia. Teemu Selanne vs Sergei Federov (among many other NHL stars). I remember Teemu making a vintage Finnish Flash move to steal the puck at the red line & fly in to score a beautiful breakaway goal. I also remember old friend Ville Nieminen make a horrible, lazy turnover & getting benched for pretty much the rest of the game, which was a little embarrassing for me as I was wearing my Niemo-signed 2001 Cup Champs hat! Such an amazing experience to watch that caliber of hockey live, I want to be able to watch that again, even on TV!
