I like Svechnikov better than I like Rantanen and Zacha. Very astute pick there. But, it’s still a reach with Connor and Meier on the board. It would be very risky for the lame duck head scout to go off the board there. If the Avs really want to do that then they should trade down or be ready at a drop of a pin to do so if someone behind them is really big on Rantanen or something like that.

I’d be a little surprised at Toronto passing over Marner but Hanifin would be a smart choice if Shanny and Babcock and keep that fan-base patient.

I like Svechnikov better than all of the guys you listed. Kyle Connor is a bad fit with the Avalanche imo and Meier is behind Svechnikov on my board. He doesn’t have the physicality questions of Rantanen or most any of the Zacha red flags (like production) because he gets after it and tore it up on the score sheet. I back Austin fully on this pick because if I was in the same position I would’ve made it myself.

I’ve been listening to NHL radio and scouts are raving about Connor as a sleeper talent. Matt Barnaby is convinced he’s a top five talent that will be a bargain in the top 10. Avs get to hide him in college for a couple of years, perhaps longer to take the long play on depth. I really like forwards that excel at top speed and do things at top speed, that’s Connor. I’ve also heard he’s got Kane/Geaudreau stick handling in a phone booth kind of puck skills.

As for Meier I just like his can’t miss motor to compliment his skill level. That, combined with this hockey sense just makes him a good fit. He’s easy to like and easy to want on your team. Nothing in his skill set puts him above Svechnikov that I can see unless you want to cite “try hard”. Svechnikov has a lot f Malkin/Kane in his hockey posture, he floats to the right spots away from the puck and only turns his motor on when he’s going to engage the play. That’s not a bad thing but I think the “dissapears for long stretches” comments on Svechnikov are due to that style of play. If he’s not having a good offensive night on the puck he’s not very noticeable. Maybe that doesn’t make him any less effective but like I said I like him a lot.

This is all great info.

On Connor, I’m not so sure the Avalanche can afford that type of luxury with a center? Especially if they play the waiting game and give him several years of college development. I guess the Avalanche could always move pieces around, and move guys to the wing to make it work if he is truly an elite talent. I still think they should target a D-man or a big winger, who might make a quicker impact.

Your comments on Svechnikov echo a lot of my thoughts on him. His skills on the puck are incredible, but away from the puck he is more about finding sweet spots and soft spots in the offensive end than he is about wreaking havoc. I think this will potentially be a great fit with Duchene or MacKinnon, who are often creating and drawing attention.

A sneaky Russian with crazy skill and finishing pop… allowing Duchene and MacKinnon to always have an outlet and someone to create for. Svech seems to understand how to get into those scoring areas and present a passing target for his line-mates. He’s also got great vision and is a fantastic playmaker himself. Avs fans might shake their heads cause of Svech’s rating, but in 2-3 years, I think they’d love the pick (if it actually happened). I like aspects of the other power winger’s games in this class, but aside from Crouse, I think Svech is my favorite winger.

Connor was my guy to profile. The Kyle Connor profile linked to was written by me. I’ve watched a bunch of his games. He does have the ability to play at high speed and I think he is a really good player but he’s another true center who would play center all through college and get to Colorado and have to learn to play wing on the fly. For an elite talent like MacKinnon, it’s been no problem, but Connor isn’t at all in that class of talent.

Why not just draft a winger when you already have so many centers that you’re playing them as wings in both the NHL and AHL? I think Connor is a damn fine player but like I said earlier, just a bad fit for the Avs and I don’t think he’s so much better than Svechnikov/Meier that it justifies adding another guy to arguably your deepest position in the organization. If the Avs drafted him on draft day, I’d be okay with it because he’s a really good player but I think there are better fits available.

If the Avs select someone ranked at 17 with a 10th overall pick and don’t trade down to get him, Sakic and Roy had better be held accountable if this player isn’t a top-six contributor within three years.

Fair point. Reaching is uncomfortable, but the Avs are going for an impact top-six player whether he’s the 8th rated guy or the 17th rated guy. It’s easy to be “bold” in a mock draft, I’ll admit, but I really do value Svechnikov’s skill-set highly. I put him in the same boat as Rantanen, Zacha, Meier, and I don’t view any of these guys as perfect players. Crouse is a bit ahead of all three, to me, and I’m a bit hesitant on Meier’s ceiling. Zacha has a lot of red flags, and is the biggest boom-or-bust guy of the bunch I think. Rantanen’s biggest knock is I don’t think he always plays as big as he is. He’s skilled, but if size pushes him up the ratings and he doesn’t use it… how valuable is it really?

Ultimately, it comes down to fit and confidence that your development plan can maximize the player you draft. If the Avs can find a way to trade back and get their guy, that’s just good asset management. But in the end, I just hope they get their guy, and develop him to his full potential.

I really like that you’re reaching and thinking outside the box. I’m so tired of hearing echos when it comes down to who they should draft. Even the “pros” are afraid to go out on a limb. Original thought is beautiful in blog-land.

I would probably take Meier if it was my choice (even if Rantanen or Zacha were still on the board), but you have good points and I def wouldn’t be upset if they went with Svechnikov.
