$7 would be the absolute max I’d pay Landy. Yes he’s been consistent with his points, but also consistent with bad turnovers and lazy penalties.

If the D core is Girard, makar, byram, and Timmons…who is killing penalties out of that group? Can’t just rely on Ej and one other guy.

I’m of the thought that if you’re playing in the NHL you are fully capable of killing penalties. Now, there are guys that you would prefer not to use there, but the coach should be able to tap any player (especially defencemen) on the shoulder and trust that they can get the job done. That being said, with Makar as your #1 and so offensively gifted that you don’t want to waste his energy on the kill, other than that I would have everyone ready to kill. Timmins was on the ice for some PK time during his two games in the bubble, and Byram can play in any situation. G would also be a good killer since he’s so good with his stick and denying ice to opponents.

Makar would be my first priority. I would not care about setting a “benchmark” or anything like that with those other guys. If they can lock him up long term at $9.5 mil, I say go for it. I would maybe start getting skittish if they were pushing for substantially over $10 mil. Their first priority should be getting that contract locked in so they know what they’re working with going forward. Landy will probably come in $7-7.5 mil which is reasonable for him, but that raise doesn’t alter the cap situation nearly as much as Makar’s contract will.

Colorado can prioritize it all they want but unless Makar wants to sign something this year, there’s not much they can do. Makar studied Sports Management at UMass, so assuming he paid attention in class, he’ll be well-versed in his situation and can be as patient as he wants.

Yes, this will be mostly up to him, but if I were Joe I would straight up ask him and his camp what they want to sign right now. If they say 7 years $10 mil, I would meekly offer up $9.5 and then if they refuse have the $10 mil contract details worked out and get it signed. As you said, he studied sports management, but he’s also highly competitive and wants to win. He might look at this situation and see that he has a chance with this team to be competing for a cup for the entire prime of his career. I’m not suggesting that he would be willing to sign for $6 mil or anything like that, but he might see the benefit of taking a $9 mil rather than $10 mil deal knowing that it will improve his chances of winning Cups (multiple). He’s also going into this knowing that as long as he stays healthy he has another huge contract left in his career.

Obviously I don’t know Cale but he strikes me as a smart individual and passionate for the game and winning. I agree with briggs, I would bet the potential to stay on the Avs for this Championship run is a big factor in his decision.

I don’t want to see girard trying to clear out Jamie Benn in front of net on the pk. Cole Graves and Z didn’t even handle that well

Thanks AJ for your article. I’m wondering how much consideration goes into next season in prep for the Seattle expansion draft that follows it. Admittedly it’s early, but most mock drafts seem to show JT Compher going to Seattle. The loss of Pickard to Vegas amounted to a nothingburger, but this time around, the Avs have more riches. How to the Avs protect themselves or what deals do they attempt after watching what went down for Vegas?
