At this point if I were Bednar I would be looking to play just about anybody other than the top guys in overtime. Bench them until they figure it out. Go with Soda-Compher/Jost-Zadorov/Cole in overtime or something, jeez

I agree 1-6 in OT warrants a shake up or splitting of 29 and 96 in OT.

That’s bonkers. You don’t sit your horses in a sudden death OT to prove a point. You’ll end up 1-7 in the extra frame and get raked over the coals by the same fans.

Another great, well written article. Phenomenal stuff as usual, I look forward to seeing what this team does after, at least in my mind was one of the most gutwrenching losses of the season. I think Mackinnon has more to give, to me he seems to complacent lately, no urgency just a lot of coasting.. but that’s obviously to the untrained eye lol

It’s cool and all to hold players accountable in a general sense for once, but frankly Bednar needs to become better as a situational coach. Barrie goes out and plays an awful first period, awful second period and yet you continue to put him out there against other team’s toplines? That’s bad coaching at this point. How often does Barrie actually dig himself out of having a bad game? It’s pretty rare, and Bednar should be familiar with that by now.

Barrie’s time last night was pretty split between lines. There wasn’t a big gap between the time he spent against the top line and the Blues’ third line. Also, keep in mind they were on the road where the opposing coach does a lot of the dictating of matchups. I don’t think Bednar did anything situationally last night that was that bad. He’s tried just about everything in OT and they’re still losing. The fact was they had their best players on the ice with a man-advantage in overtime and they botched it in the worst way. What happened last night wasn’t coaching, it was atrocious execution.

I don’t really agree that it was only down to execution. Compher’s line was rolling for a lot of the night while the top line was just average and fumbling with Barrie’s bad play, yet instead of reading the situation and giving the line creating chances more time Bednar rolls out the top line all the same just hoping they save the day.

Also my point about Barrie’s deployment wasn’t meant to imply that he was only matched up against the opposing topline, rather I remain unimpressed that Bednar continues do to nothing to address Barrie’s play when it’s clear he’s going to be a disaster all night. Fewer minutes, tell him to focus on being more conservative if he’s fumbling pucks at the blue line all night etc. There are ways to mitigate issues other than scratching a player. Last year his answer was to bury Soderberg‘s line in defensive starts but that gimmick isn’t a long term solution when the offense from the Josts, Kerfoots, Wilsons etc is already drying up.

There is no way this wasn’t execution. Every NHL coach would want that line out on a 4 on 3 in overtime. Barrie didn’t “fumble” the puck. Instead he took a shot that you just can’t take in that situation. He’s got 2 choices there (29 or 96) and lots of time. Instead, he mindlessly gets his shot blocked. He deserves to get called out in video review w/ the team. He cost them the game.

Gripping the sticks just a little tight? Frustrated and no confidence? Does Landy need to step up and LEAD? Tonight should be an interesting game–time to destroy Dallas.

And good for Bednar.
Some of the Avs need a serious ass chewing in the worst way. We’ve seen Bednar bench a few guys (Z particularly) when they aren’t playing well, and it has worked. And I don’t think anyone should be exempt from being sat to send the message that they need to get their head out of their ass.

I’ve never been a big Barrie fan. Yes, I realize he can be dynamic offensively and be a huge asset when he’s playing well. But ,to me, his all too often poor decision making and defensive weaknesses are far too much of a liability.

AJ, I’m wondering what’s going on with EJ. Is his shoulder ok? Are there political issues in the room? That’s just not the same guy that we’ve seen in the past. The old EJ doesn’t quit on that play like that.

Maybe he’s had enough, but where in his postgame presser does he say him having had enough is going to lead to him actually doing anything different. All he did was indirectly call out some players and say the typical, “we have to be better,” coaches line. If he’s so fed up, where are the consequences to the team?

What consequences? Reduced ice time for the best 4 guys on the team? How does that improve the odds for success?
