That was a bad mistake by Landy but it seems to me there isn’t any leadership on that top line except for Landy and if he doesn’t make the heroic play no one else takes charge. Thanks for the comments about 96. He seems lost. I couldn’t believe that he missed an excellent chance tonight. He had a few other good looks too.

It’s JUST off the puck play, folks. Other than that, everything else is just fine.

I was thinking about this the other day… You think how much Rants falls down wears on him as the season goes on? It’s almost like taking an extra 4-6 hits each game. How can he be so good at “protecting the puck with his body” as we’ve heard so much about this season but fall down so goddamn much?

One night it’s 96, another night it’s 29 or 92 that is underperforming or taking a bonehead penalty or doing this or that wrong. For a long stretches it was Varly that was not living up to standards. To be honest, I think it’s a really pointless to pick out the top three guys, or this or that player. They have all had consistency issues. But more importantly, there is a real sense of stagnation with this team. For a couple of months at the beginning they looked like a team willing to take that next step, i.e. go from a wild card team a regular post season team. Then this happened. The funny thing is you can’t even blame it on any injuries. You can’t say: oh we lost MacKinnon or EJ or so on – the only player we have lost long term is Kamenev! Is he the reason why the Avs will miss the play-offs? This team is stagnating and regressing. In my opinion, that’s a problem that starts at the top of the organization. Like the BSN writers, I am very hesitant to put this on Bednar or even Sakic. But when you will look back at this season, how can you not scrutinize their part in the regression of this team? Nobody seriously expected them to leap past Nashville or Winnipeg this year. But we all expected them to get a little bit better, we expected development. So far not so much!

This is one hell of a rough stretch of games. We are still only three points out of it. Rantanen really has stagnated a bit but hey we know how good of a player he is and maybe Sakic can sign him for a few million less than league leading money. Maybe we need some sort of trade to shake things up? Or we just stick it out and keep trying with our group until seasons end. Everyone keeps freaking out saying we NEED to make the playoffs or the season is a bust. I disagree. I want them in for sure, but this group just isn’t going to get a cup this year whether they make it in or not. Playoff experience would be nice, but if we get another lottery pick on top of Ottawa’s 1st and 3rd rounders with guys like Kaut, Bowers and Makar coming up. They are going to have tremendous depth after this summer. Honestly my only concern right now is our goalies. Is Varly staying? Can Gruby actually be a legit NHL starter? Even with the added depth this summer, if we can’t at least get league average goaltending then it doesn’t really matter who we add.

Keep in mind this is the second or third rebuild in the last 10 years. Perhaps making the playoffs isn’t that important (well it kind of is actually), but what discouraging is the lack of development of this team. Why should we assume that things will magically turn around with Makar and Bowers, when they aren’t really turning around with the talent we have now?

Interesting article. The overall drop in production and how ice cold some of these guys are is astounding. The giveaways and horrible face off percentages continue with no end in sight. Production will get back to normal at some point, but this team will never go anywhere unless they fix both of those things.
