Can someone please explain to me what a 1-3-1 structure is?
Thanks!

You can Google “hockey neutral zone trap” and get all kind of solid explanations; videos too!

One forechecker, three guys abreast at their defensive blueline, and one guy in the D-zone.

It’s a forechecking strategy, where a team has one player up front chasing the puck, three players across the neutral zone, and one back in the defensive zone. The idea is that any rush is stopped before it can enter the offensive zone.

Sounds like a Film Room topic!

Only 1 Sharks player is pressuring our D. 3 Sharks are covering the redline. 1 Shark is covering their back end. It is designed to restrict neutral zone access.

1 forechecker pressures the puck, 3 players spread out and essentially clog up the nuetral zone and 1 defenseman is back in case somethong breaks through.

Props to EJ for manning up, big time. Keep coming in waves boys, no matter what the Sharks do or how many they score, you will eventually overwhelm them and come out on top. They are running out of gas and ready to go play golf.

pretty amusing. Tom, the editor at MHH has been pimping EJs play and now here EJ admits he wasn’t proud of it.

I just tried reading the article Tom wrote about their defensive miscues in game 3, and I just can’t do it. The guy is not a good writer. I don’t know if he’s just careless or what, but his articles always have mistakes that would be fixed by a simple proofread.

Classy article AJ…EJ bleeds Avalanche Burgundy and deserves kudos especially as so many of us have used him as a whipping post this season. Hope his strong play from last night continues…like others will be curious to learn at season end (in June) if he has been playing hurt…

Love EJ’s openness.
It’s always great to see a guy get things back on track after a rough outing.
Maybe his role is different this year, but I think there’s still something missing from his game that we used to see in the past.
I haven’t looked up the numbers to compare, but it just seems he was more of an offensive threat in previous years.
I realize he isn’t playing on the PP. But I recall EJ rushing the puck up-ice more and being more dangerous in the O-zone .

Nice read AJ.

EJ has been one of my favorite players ever since he came to the Avs, and it really has been tough to watch him be unable to put it all together in the playoffs when it was obvious how much it meant to him to get there after missing out last year – he was by far the happiest guy on the ice at the Winnipeg game when they clinched.

As you said, at least he’s done some consistently great work on the PK – as much as he was culpable for the Sharks’ 2-0 lead in Game 3, he was also a big part of the reason it wasn’t 4-0. He made a couple serious standout shorthanded plays in that game

Watching him find a new level last night and play his best game of the postseason, maybe one of his best games of the entire season, was immensely rewarding. Here’s hoping he’s found his next gear and keeps it there for game 5

It was great to see EJ respond and have a great game 4. I was frustrated by his play in game 3 and suggested a scratch especially if he is injured. My foot is in my mouth. It was great to see him rebound. Maybe, even though he is a veteran player, his player summary on the Avs website says he only has 16 playoff games played. So his playoff learning curve matches the teams’ and the mistakes that go with a learning curve. The Avs are maturing as this series goes along and game 4 shows it is so. If they keep their speed game up, limit the mistakes and keep playing with desperation, they can take the sharks out. No doubt about it. Go AVS

Thank you Gents for explaining the 1-3-1 trap.
