I liked Carl, but no team was game planning on how to stop him. Now teams will have to at minimum split up their best pairing to game plan around Kadri and Mackinnon.

Kadri and MacKinnon as top centers is going to be really nasty, and will certainly help with mathcups, especially in the playoffs. I’m excited to see what Bednar can do with Kadri

Well written article, Luke!
I’m looking forward to more.

That said, sometimes I wonder about all these statistics… I can certainly buy into them for larger populations of players, whole teams etc., but I wonder about them for single players.

It’s like when I go to a doctor and they diagnose me based on statistics, instead of the actual patient they have in front of them.

A single player can always surprise us with a good or bad period, or a good or bad chemistry with certain other players.

But hey, this is all about trying to see patterns… On my end I wish we could have kept Soderberg along with acquiring Kadri.

And yet!…. I’m totally pumped to have Kadri, as well as Donskoi and Bura.
Exciting season ahead!
Again, nice article!

I definitely get what you mean. Stats are certainly not perfect and can be limiting indicators of a player’s potential, which is why I’m also an advocate for watching film to get a full feel for a player. However, they’re the best way as of now to predict patterns in play styles and potential fits on a team. I think Naz will fit in well with Colorado’s speed and his offensive capabilities will be more effective in boosting players like Jost than Soderberg’s were. As for keeping soderberg too, that would’ve been good but I’m more excited to see some of the young guys get a chance to boost offense from the third line.

The Avs are definitely more dangerous with Kadri vs Soderberg. As long as he stays out of the box, it will be great for the Avs. As mentioned, if Kadri jump starts AB, JD and TJ, it will be an effective 1st and 2nd line combo for Bednar to use. Sakic had to do something with Barrie, especially after drafting Byram. This seems to be a good trade for the Avs, especially as Barrie will probably be a one year rental for Toronto.

How does everyone feel about Jost as 2nd line winger?

Seems like if Landy was there, that having MacK+Rants then Landy+Kadri coming at you is a much bigger legit proven threat and major problem than Jost + Kadri.

Everyone…like everyone loves Jost and his potential. But…it’s time for legit chaos. Landy + Kadri sounds perfect.

I share your lack of confidence in Jost.
There have been a number of suggestions about how to make the second line even more of a threat, mainly by moving Jost down to the next line.
They all sound good to me.
My only concern is for Bednar to be able to adapt quickly when things aren’t working out.

I actually have a good amount of confidence that Jost is going to take a step this season. He showed some great flashes last season and I think he just needs the right surroundings to blossom. That’s where I believe Kadri’s value is the greatest

I totally agree. My previous piece outlined why the Avs should trade Barrie and they did exactly what I had hoped, outside of acquiring a younger center. It sucks that Kerfoot had to go too, but I definitely think Colorado won the trade in the long run. Paying him $3.5 mill and Barrie $9 mill would’ve limited the Avs’ potential over the next few years

I like the idea of a 2nd line of Landy-Kadri-Compher. That is a total sandpaper F-you line, and I would love to see other teams just lose their minds playing against them.

Landi & Kadri combo with another winger sounds good too. Bednar will have lots of options, it is up to him to find that ultimate chemistry that will make the Avs nasty to play against. I am ready for the season to begin now!

I really wanna see Kadri and landenskog together on a line because I think they can punish teams down low and I think Kadri on the top pp unit is a big upgrade to Wilson or anyone who was trying to fill that roll and he’s good on draws.

Luke, nice article. I enjoyed how you used the figures in your analysis. The interactive charts are nifty. Much more useful than screenshots or pngs.
