Great article AJ! I said it to a buddy of mine the night they won, “numbers just got retired tonight”. While Sakic was just an adviser at the time of Landy’s draft, I think it taught him a valuable lesson. Ever since he has taken over as GM he has had his priority list in mind when acquiring players no matter what the method and it is clear that the top 3 on that list are character, hockey intelligence, and speed in that order. He took the lesson from Pierre Lacroix that they are in the business of entertaining their fans and giving back to the community and this team does both of those things in spades. This is going to be an interesting off season, can’t wait for all of the DNVR coverage and analysis.

Really good AJ. I’ve always loved Landy’s degree of personal responsibility. I have loved that he never takes the podium unless the team, or he has a bad game. He always shows respect for the refs – only 1 time I can remember him calling them out in a presser, and it was this season – 11 years and no whining! Sakic is the epitome of character, and it shows throughout his organization. I totally agree about your point about team focus on personal accountability; even our head coach – just look at the stark contrast of ours and TB’s head coach press conferences! Teams can win championships in so many different ways, and we embrace our teams for a lot of reasons – us as adults, and also the impact on our youth. We are so fortunate to not just have another cup in this town, but to have the depth of character to go with it – that, is what I love in sports, and that, is what I love about hockey, and Sakic, and the Aves.
