Despite being assessed a five-minute major penalty and an automatic game-misconduct for it, the kneeing penalty by Ian Cole that injured Anaheim’s Devin Shore will not be subject to further discipline by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, BSN Denver has learned.
An NHL source said there will be no hearing for Cole on the hit. In other words, case closed on the matter.
I gotta be honest and say I’m surprised by this. I expected a suspension. I mean, Cole got a 5-minute major and automatic game misconduct for the hit, which was labeled as “kneeing.” Although it does appear that the principal point of contact with Shore’s thigh, not knee, it still looks to me like Cole stuck his knee out to make the hit. The fact that Shore was badly injured on the play (the Ducks are still awaiting results on an MRI) only increased my belief Cole would be suspended. But, no.
If this had happened to Nathan MacKinnon by a Ducks defenseman, how mad would you be right now, Avs fan? Just sayin.’
Here’s video of the hit:

Dirty play, he should miss time.

As an Avs fan I think Player safety is a joke. He should have been suspended. Bet this hit get’s played at the GM meetings.

Although it looked more like “thigh on thigh” I would not have been the least upset if he’d been suspended. When the play happened I turned to my wife and said, “I’m getting the idea that Cole is kind of a dirty player.” Landy should not have gotten 4 days for that cross check of Tkachuk and Cole should probably not be getting nothing for this.

wait…the Avs were involved with a bad hit and the DoPS didn’t come down hard on them? Umm…ok. I legit thought it was a bad hit, not that Cole is dirty, but the hit definitely was. Can we still get Graves back in the lineup?

Looked hip on hip to me. Didn’t like the hit but didn’t think it was super dirty

He should have received at least a one-game suspension.
Hockeyhead
It is a bad hit, he used his leg. Player safety is losing credibility. If the Ducks had done that to one of our star players we would be screaming for blood and a suspension.

You really can’t lose something you’ve never had…

I saw it in person and just like Dater, I said “Well, he’s getting suspended.”
I can see that it was more thigh, but he easily could have avoided that and he had zero chance at hitting him in the core with that trajectory.
Not that I like our guys suspended, but that was straight up dumb and reckless and deserves a pay deduction/sit down.

If that hit would have been on any of our players I would have been very irritated that the other teams player didn’t get suspended. It was totally unnecessary.

Cole is a liability who tries to make up for things with dirty plays and unnecessary fights

Further proof the league hates the Avs. If it was someone good they would have suspended him. Instead the league decided to burden us with Cole’s continuing presence in the lineup.

this guy is quickly becoming another Beauchiman(sp)

He should’ve been suspended at least 2 games…maybe more. That was just a dirty hit. I said it to my buddy at the time, “Maybe we’ll get Graves back during his suspension, at least”.
