Great breakdown here AJ. I am of the thought that if EJ waives his NMC you roll into the next two years with him even though he would likely be getting third pairing minutes at $6 mil it is worth it for a couple of reasons in my mind. First the leadership and presence he is on the team along with being an exceptional penalty killer and a good puck mover who (usually) makes good decisions under pressure in the D-zone to get out of trouble. Second, him making that $6 mil can just serve as a place holder for MacK’s next contract where you just roll his money over and pretty much call it a day on that deal. I like this idea better than dealing with dead money in a flat cap for four years. Third for the sentimental reasons and giving them that veteran close to the end of his career looking for a Cup and gives them something in the room to really play for in the playoffs – bring back the “Mission 16W” shirts!

Can Johnson waive the NMC for the X-draft only, but leave the NMC in place to block a trade/package? It’s more than fair for the Avs to give him a choice between a buyout or waiving, but then it seems wrong to take advantage of that by intentionally “trading” him in a package with picks to make SEA pick him. He wants to both win and to stay here.

AJ, good article on The EJ situation. Hopefully EJ does waive and then the Avs handle it with class and give EJ the respect that he has earned and deserves. I hope it is a win win for both EJ and the Avs. I also agree that it is a very remote chance that Seattle would take EJ because his health is such a big question right now.

is there a chance the Ads missed EJ against Vegas? Could he have made a difference, even if he’s overpriced? What are the chances the Abs Kucherov him next year?
