Instead of ditching the loser point, what if we made all games worth 3 points and awarded 3 points for a regulation win? No ties and the Vancouver situation gets fixed.

Interesting thoughts. To be fair to the NHL, the idea has never been to award a “loser” point or reward a team for “getting close to winning,” but to give both teams their point for a tie at the end of regulation like always, and then add a bonus point for whoever ends up with a win. I think all games should be the same value, so a win in regulation should be worth three points. I’d like to see how that would affect the standings.

FYI, it’s playoff “berth,” not “birth.”

It’s not really a “Loser Point,” it’s the “Winner’s Bonus.” Both teams get one point if the game is tied at the end of regulation, just like always. The difference is that they award an extra point to the team that wins in overtime or the shootout. OTL points are valid. Bonus points in OT/SO are the problem.
