I have always thought that Mackinnon’s aggressive speed and Rantanen’s deliberate pace were like oil and water. To work together, they’ve needed an emulsifier in the form of Landeskog, Lehkonen, or Nichuskin. Someone to excell at the forechecking, backchecking, net front grinding, and off-puck creation of space. Oftentimes positioned in the crease, or digging pucks out of corners, with Nate and Mikko on either side, acting as their connector.

For the first time in a long time, there isn’t an obvious emulsifier in the top six. It’s, hopefully, only a short term problem, but perhaps this necessity might mother up some invention. Could we see Rantanen and Mittlestadt develop some chemistry, creating a second potent duo to compliment Mackinnon+Drouin? Might LOC continue his gradual ascent up the lineup and show that he’s capable of being a complimentary piece in the top six? Could Miles Wood? Kovalenko, Foudy, Olausson, or Ritchie?

Whatever the coaching staff experiment with in the short term is unlikely to persist once Lehkonen is fit to play. If something does click, I imagine that Bednar and company will remember and keep it in mind as a contingency for later on when inevitably the necessity will arise again. The seeds sown early this season may bear fruit in the spring. Delectable, emulsifying fruit.

Love this thinking. I know they tried Mikko a couple times with Casey last year but it always seemed so short lived to actually give it a viable chance to develop chemistry. In my mind, that would be the best case scenario for future flexibility.

Just curious what the hesitancy is around Annunen. Yes, he’s unproven against quality competition but you have to start somewhere to break in, so why not give him the chance to be the actual 2C? If not this year, when is he supposed to have the chance to show he actually IS this guy?

I’m not against Justus as the backup, so I’m speculating, but I imagine the argument is that given Georgiev’s wobbles last season, it would be nice to have more of a sure thing in case of emergency. Lankinen’s no world beater, but he has proven to be at least close to NHL level. Could Annunen be better? Absolutely. I would even guess that it’s likely. Could he be worse? It’s hard to say no with any certainty. Classic prospect catch 22; don’t trust him if he hasn’t proven he can do it, can’t prove it if he’s not trusted to play. It takes a leap of faith that’s harder to justify on a team that’s in cup or bust mode. Imagine the reaction if Georgiev is hurt or struggling in the playoffs, Justus is bad, and it ends the Avs’ season. As fans, we get to dream on the potential of prospects without having to worry about losing our jobs if a guy can’t hack it.

I would give him the chance to prove it. If he hasn’t done enough by the trade deadline, maybe you give a middle round pick to Detroit for one of their 4 mediocre goalies. I think that Justus is nearing the point where if the team doesn’t feel like they can give him the backup job, it’s best to trade him to a team that would.
