Yeah this weekend was rough. Back-to-back losses against teams out of the playoffs when we should be catching the division leaders is a gut punch. Especially after they looked really encouraging in 4 of 5 games before the break after Bednar challenged them to raise the bar. It does seem like they’re a bit of victim of playing down/up to the competition. When games really matter it does seem like a different team shows up and more offense balance has happened.
Mittelstadt is the big concern for me. Our 2nd line is just a hole and it seems like the puck just dies on his stick. He continues to seem tentative and off with his passing.
You mentioned Nichushkin’s absence. Yes, in an ideal world his presence shouldn’t be the difference between a functioning offense and not; however, the history shows that our record with and without Valerie is pretty stark contrast. For Mittelstadt for instance, does Nichushkin’s presence create more stability and allow him to find his game? If that second line starts clicking I think things look very different. Time will tell, let’s hope this weekend will be forgotten soon.
