Despite Philipp Grubauer being the hottest goalie in the NHL at the moment (a .980 saves percentage and 0.99 goals-against average in the last five starts), and despite him having a three-year contract and presumably the inside track at being the No. 1 goalie of the Avalanche for the future, there is a strong chance Semyon Varlamov could return to the team.
BSN Denver has learned there is “mutual interest” in the veteran Russian goaltender signing a new contract with Colorado – despite the fact that Varlamov can be an unrestricted free agent July 1. There have, in fact, been recent talks between the team and Varlamov’s representatives, and it’s believed an offer has been made to Varlamov – though neither side would confirm that to BSN Denver.
It’s a bit of a complicated situation. While Grubauer has been terrific of late, most of his play previously was average or below, numbers-wise. Though he may well turn into a bona-fide No. 1 goalie, the Avs want some insurance in case they think he’s still got some development to go. They have Pavel Francouz as a potential partner with Grubauer, but there’s one problem: Francouz has only played on a one-year contract this season, after coming over from the KHL. After a season in which he was an AHL all-star with the Colorado Eagles, Francouz may want some good coin on his next deal, and he can potentially go UFA on July 1.
Varlamov wants to stay in Denver. Asked by BSN Denver if he’d take a “hometown discount” to stay, the veteran said this: “I’m the one who’s going to have to make a decision in the end, not my agent. My agent does all the contract stuff, but I’m the one who makes the decision. It’s not about taking a discount…I didn’t even think about it.”
Varlamov may, indeed, have to take less than the $5.9 million he’s averaged per year in his latest contract if he wants to stay in Denver. He will be 31 next month. His saves percentage (.910) is at the exact league average overall. His saves percentage last season, in 51 games, was .920.
But Varlamov is finally starting to feel like his older self, physically at least. The injuries to his hip and groin in recent years were finally corrected when he saw Dr. Marc Phillipon in Vail, probably the country’s leading expert in treating hip injuries.
The question is: can both sides work out a deal that they’re happy with? The Avs figure to have lots of space under the salary cap this summer (Capfriendly.com says about $33.4 million for 2019-20), but the team does have to negotiate new deals with potential restricted free agents Mikko Rantanen, Alexander Kerfoot, J.T. Compher and Nikita Zadorov). Rantanen could cost as much as $10 million to re-sign, given the comparables to some recent contracts around the league.
Another unanswered question: Will Grubauer’s hot streak cool the Avs off on wanting to bring Varly back? After all, Varlamov is sitting on the bench right now, as Grubauer has kept the team’s playoff hopes still alive as it enters a Thursday night game in Dallas, a game Grubauer is expected to start.
The team had no comment, when asked by BSN Denver about Varlamov’s status. It could get more interesting as time moves along.

I, personally, would be pretty pissed if Francouz walks because they resign Varly. Joe constantly says “stick to the plan”. The plan was let Francouz adjust to NA ice and let him and Grubs fight it out next season. We know Varly is not a Stanley Cup goalie. Like, that’s fact. He had one really good vezna quality year but otherwise his stats are extremely close to league average.
The Avs have a problem luring in big FAs as well as re-signing UFAs (okay, maybe that’s just Stats and rentals but still… Re-signing a rental would be nice, yeah?). Having Francouz walk because the org re-signs an aging goalie with injury and consistency issues isn’t going to lure in that big 2nd line UFA the org so desperately needs.
This season fell apart with the goalies. Rolling out the same tandem isn’t going to help draw in a big UFA. They didn’t have faith in Varly, hence Grub and Frankie coming on. This season didn’t change that. Some GM, somewhere is watching this situation rubbing their hands together. Top guy in KHL, adjusts well to AHL, plays respectfully in 2 relief appearances, doesn’t get a shot when he probably should have… He won’t get a starting job on July 1st but someone will give him a back up role in the NHL.
At some point the org has to see that giving opportunity when it’s earned can help it’s credibility with players. I don’t hear anyone saying Frankie hasn’t earned an opportunity. In conclusion, Varly is aging, inconsistent, and prone to injury. I like the guy but I like improving and winning more and I just feel like it’s time to move on. Yeah, he is the second best goalie the Avs have had and he should be appreciated as such. But he’s never won a playoff series for the Avs. Move on, Joe. Please. The time for comfort is over. Next off-season it’s time to hit the gas and move forward.

That’s exactly my thoughts. I’m tired of Varly’s streaks. Too many cold one which buries the team. I want Frankie to be Grubi backup next season with a chance to compete for starting job. I think by recent run and keeping AVS playoffs hopes Grubauer deserves to have a shot to be starter next season. Don’t think Varly takes less or at most the same amount of money as Grubi and it’s not very good idea to pay backup more than starter.

Agree 100%. Time to move on from Varly. BTW, I don’t believe Varly ever won a playoff series in Washington either.

AuthorHe did win one, actually
The Heretic
He did. My first ever rant post that I looked up stats for. I even looked up league average numbers. You know its serious when I look up stats in the middle of a rant.
bjjones05
Agreed. Long term, I think Frankie needs to be given the chance. Varly has been one of my favorite players, but I can’t see the Avs making a deep run in the playoffs, much less winning the Cup, with his inconsistent play.
Eidolon
Are you applying the same criteria to Grubs? Cuz he hasn’t won anything in the post-season either. Hell, he got yanked and his team never looked back. You want to bag on Varly’s numbers this season? Do it. It’s deserved. Remember that despite the recent turnaround, Grubs has one good year of a starter’s number of games and then he pooped the bed in the playoffs, so don’t hold post-season play out as a reason to pick one over the other. It’s isn’t the right criteria.
The Heretic
It’s not one or the other for me in this. It’s just not Varly. He’s proven he doesn’t have what it takes to consistently get to the playoffs, let alone win playoff games. It’s not about whether Grubs is going to better or if Frankie will be better. It’s about it CAN’T get better unless we move on from Varly.
The rebuild is or should be wrapping up after this off-season. It makes zero sense to keep an inconsistent, injury prone goalie. If Grub shits the bed and Frankie sucks next year then you go UFA or trade (al a Patty Roy) not keep wasting time on Varly.
Avsfan24
If this team let’s Francouz walk to resign Varly, it may be the final straw for me. I’m all about team loyalty but there’s only soo many terrible decisions a fan can watch while simultaneously witnessing other management groups make great decisions.
Nels
I’m actually right there with you Avsfan24. This season has hurt me more than 16-17 did. This is JOE’s team now, and the inconsistent messages and terrible management and coaching decisions just keep right on coming.
Nels
AD can we have an update on Nieto’s injury status at some point please sir?
dudleyconrad
I love Varly but was really looking forward to having Francouz up next year. Didn’t realize he was on a one-year deal; the obvious move is to give him some money and term. We have the space.
Please let Varly walk.
Cerveau
If Gruby plays inconsistently from here on out it will make the decision even harder.
I’m guessing (though not hoping) Gruby will be inconsistent. Because, after all, when have the Avs ever been consistent or made anything easy.
It also makes sense for Joe to hold out on a decision about Varly until Francouz decides whether he wants to stay or not. If Franky decides he wants to leave then it makes sense to hold on to Varly. If Franky wants to stay it makes sense for the long term to let Varly go.
So it seems to me it all really boils down to what Francouz wants.

I think if the Avs are basing their goalie decision on a 27yr old AHL goalie they have problems. This is all on Grubauer. If he gets them into the playoffs, Varly is good as gone. If he falters down the stretch, all bets are off.
