The first year of his elc would only be burned if he played 9 regular season games?

Because he isn’t under the age of 19, a year would be burned regardless of how many games he played this year. Recent examples of college players burning a year of their elc include Charlie McAvoy and Casey Mittelstadt.

I do hope that his NCAA success translates to the NHL. It’s not a guarantee that he’ll have success, but I really look forward to seeing this kid on the team next season.

Burning a year of the elc can be a good thing regardless how he’d play this season in the NHL. He’d be signing the next contract as a younger player which could mean a more affordable contract long term if you think about salary cap and the team. This is basicly how the Avs got MacKinnon long term for such a steal. It’ll take time for Makar to develope into any kind of a superstar but if they believe he will then just hurry up and burn up that year of the elc and do it fast.

I think it may be a good idea to do it. With the way college draftee’s work, if we don’t offer him a contract, it may piss him off and he signs with another team. We got Kerfoot and lost Butcher that way.

Would you burn a year if he made you a cup contender this year? Because, there are a few around the league that think he could.

I say sign Makar ASAP to avoid any potential issues with him not signing a ELC down the road like many others who have elected to become a UFA. I believe Makar is going to be a major difference maker during the playoff stretch of the season.
