Nice article…for me Saad is a very good player but not at 6m , i see a contract a là Toffoli, 4.2M x3-4yrs Max …With the pandémie player will chose a place they want to Live for a long time i Think …Landy a 6.8M x6yrs is good contract for him and Makar is a very loyal kid , i m not gonna be surprise too see a Chabot contract or a 5.5M x2 or3 yrs ….cool

So you’re saying that Makar, who won the Hobey Baker, just won the Calder, was in the Norris discussion and is a legit gamebreaker from the blueline, all while being 22 at the time the contract negotiations are occurring will sign a ‘loyalty’ contract under 6 million and for only a couple of years? How do I put this politely….

You’re delusional. Seek professional help. Do you really value Makar so poorly?

You described a bridge deal. A contract to get some show-me effort and protect both the player and the club over an interim type timespan. Makar warrants a long-term deal that’s in keeping with his contemporaries from a compensation standpoint. That ain’t the Chabot contract.

If we get him long-term for less than $8m/year, it’ll be a steal, flat cap or no. If Colorado signs him to anything less than 6+ years, all of the management should be fired. The only caveat is if he has a SUBSTANTIAL downturn in production this season or injury concerns that have long-term implications. But for where we’re sitting today, based on his production and youth, an offer like you described will immediately generate a trade request to a team that knows what the hell they’re doing.

Where do you live!??? Pandemic, no People in the stand, flat cap, only Montréal give big contract with long terme this Yr?!? Only le CH…. Toffoli at 4.25m/4yrs is their Best contract and normaly he would have sign for minimum of 6X6m…..even Pitrangelo (better than Karlson for me and more complete took way less than à lot of D) MacVoy have a 4.9m bridge deal….. Makar is very like MacKinnon and pretty sure he want to win more than having 1-2m more à Yr…. And Saad at 4.2m is ok for him if he fits for sure….go and watch the News Covid19 is real ?

6X6 MAX? Are you high? That’s EJ’s contract from 2016! There’s no way Makar’s agent is telling him that he should sign that. Hell, Makar makes almost 3/year over his ELC with his performance bonuses. He’ll be due a substantial raise.

Pietroangelo is getting 8.8/year in Vegas and he got 6.5/year for 7 years from STL back in 2013. Your own comparable made more than that almost 8 years prior to the Makar contract! Karlsson got 6.5/year for 7 years on his 2nd contract (2012) and 11.5/year for 8 years on his 3rd (2020). OEL got 5.5/year for 6 years on his 2nd (2013) and 8.25/year for 8 on his third (2020). Hedman’s current deal was 7.875/year for 8 years, signed in 2017. Justin Faulk is getting more than 6/year now. JUSTIN FAULK!!

I was talking about Toffoli that normal Yr he would have sign for 6m….. Just watch Sergachev contract 4.8M x 3 yrs….everyone was talking about 6m /2 yrs for him not long ago….. Makar is my top player in the NHL AND one of m’y favorite of my 35yrs i watch hockey btw….yes with no flat cap i sign him for 11m X 8 yrs….. but Makar seems like à good team player Who take less than is value to win more….. That s it ?

Yeah, I don’t see it. Not with Mack coming up. They’ll need the EJ money for him, probably all $6M, so carrying $2M from a buy out doesn’t seem particularly favorable either. Also, it will be interesting to see how these escrow increases affect the willingness of players to take “discounts” in negotiation.

The one thing I really forgot to tackle in this piece is the ACTUAL COST of re-signing Saad since I don’t think he’s getting that $6M again. You see what Toffoli got and they have pretty similar profiles, though Toffoli is younger. The combination of the EJ buyout and any of the players taken in expansion could realistically pay for Saad’s next deal. But the real problem is the declining player aspect and Colorado’s robust farm system means there’s a legit chance they’d be paying for the worse player in a few years.

I agree with Chris, I doubt Saad gets signed.

One thing I’ve always found interesting though, is how Kevin Labanc signed a one year million dollar deal(coming off a 57 pt. season) presumably because the Sharks were in cap hell, and the next year he signs a 4 year deal worth 18.9 m(coming off a 33 point not quit full season).

Does that sort of ‘deal’ seem more likely to occur with the flat cap?

A sweetheart deal for a team he thought was going to compete for a Stanley Cup? No, I don’t think those will become more common. What we might see just a little more of is the depth guys like Jost accepting really low qualifying offers instead of holding out for bigger deals because they don’t have arbitration rights and teams can squeeze them as the player will have no leverage. There might be a small uptick in those deals for a year or two.

Good article about the complexities of resigning players and prioritizing who to sign first. I have always liked Saad and would like to see him resigned to a 2-4 year contract that is fair to both player and team, but as you said you have to sign the priority guys first and then see if you can fit him in. Lots of variables in this puzzle. It will be interesting to see where it all ends up. Excited and just hoping to see some hockey this year with the team as it is now.

If we assume Graves is the player taken by Seattle, what are the chances the Avalanche could find a home for the Donskoi contract without retention? I know there will be a flat cap, but teams will have a bit more time to adjust to the lower cap with bad contracts coming off the books plus some teams will need to replace a player taken in expansion. I am looking at a Colin Wilson type trade, mid-round pick for a serviceable middle six winger who is a bit overpaid. The $3.9M would cover most of Saad’s contract and it creates a spot on the third line for Newhook to come in as the 3C. Compher would be another candidate, but then you would have to free up another $400K.

Teams have had a hell of a time giving money away for decent players this offseason. I imagine next year it will be a little bit easier but if it’s not, finding a home for Donskoi might be harder than you think. There isn’t an IMMEDIATE need to move Donskoi just to try to keep Saad. At that point it might be too much work for not enough pay off

Trade JTC for draft capital/prospect. Graves to kraken. That’s $6 off the books.
