Avs lose to Pittsburgh, in a rematch with the Yinzers from last week. Almost a carbon copy game, in reverse.
Let’s get to Avs individual grades:
Gabe Landeskog (B-) – Pretty good puck-possession numbers, but not quite enough impact in a positive way offensively. Frankly, this grade might be a little too high, but Christmas is coming.
Nathan MacKinnon (F) – Nothing on the score sheet, two shots on net, lost 11 of his first 13 faceoffs. One of his worst games in the last 12 months. He must work harder to get better on faceoffs. Frankly, it’s become a real liability.
Mikko Rantanen (B) – Active throughout, put shots on net, picked up another point. He was blatantly held toward the end of the second period on a breakaway and didn’t get a call. One of the worst non-calls I’ve seen in a while. Referees were garbage tonight.
Alexander Kerfoot (C) – Not all his fault, as I think Jared Bednar is trying too hard again with this guy, to find the right role for him. Stop playing him with scrubs. It doesn’t work. That said, he wasn’t good tonight.
Tyson Jost (C-) – He’s starting to look invisible again, offensively at least. I don’t like Bednar moving him around again in the lineup though, either. Things were working well with him, then Bednar tried to fix what wasn’t broken.
Colin Wilson (F) – Total non-factor. Nothing at all to speak of in any positive, tangible sense.
Matt Calvert (B+) – I liked his battle level and intensity, plus he put up an assist. Good game after being sucker-punched in Detroit.
Carl Soderberg (B-) – Scored a goal, but was beaten to the front of the net on Patric Hornqvist’s tie-breaking goal early in the third period.
Matt Nieto (A) – Great short-handed goal to tie the game in the second. I thought he should have played more, quite frankly.
Gabriel Bourque (C) – Got an assist, but he continues to be kind of a non-factor most every game.
Vladislav Kamenev (F) – Terrible showing. Minus-2 in minimal minutes, negative puck-possession numbers. May be time for another trip to the minors.
J.T. Compher (B) – Could have gotten credit for a goal, if not for a Carl goalie interference call. Technically, the call was correct, but it’s an example of how the NHL has gotten a bit too far on protecting goalies from routine physical interaction.
Erik Johnson (C) – I didn’t think he was physical enough around the net. Memo to Johnson: You’re a really big guy, it’s OK to use some of that advantage in front of the net.
Sam Girard (C) – He wasn’t bad, he wasn’t great. Needs to be more aggressive offensively.
Ian Cole (B) – Good puck-possession numbers, got an assist and had three shots on net – or one more than Nathan MacKinnon. Nice video presentation to him from the Pittsburgh crowd.
Patrik Nemeth (D) – Took the slashing penalty on Sidney Crosby that led to the game-winning PP goal by Patric Hornqvist. Seems like his role/ice time is shrinking more as time goes on.
Nikita Zadorov (B+) – I thought Z was fine. Four shots on goal, positive puck-possession numbers, even on the plus-minus.
Tyson Barrie (C+) – Scored a really nice power-play goal, but the rust showed on defense, in his first game back in a while. A little too slow in his decision-making with the puck in his own end.
Semyon Varlamov (D) – Two great saves on breakaways at the end of the second period, but he was brutal in the third. The first three goals, I didn’t think were much his fault. Good deflections and traffic on him. But that third…terrible.

I understand MacKinnon had a bad night, but giving him an F? He had some good chances and could have had 3 or 4 points if the avs didn’t miss 95% of their opportunities.

Agreed – I think a F is a bit harsh – but far from his best night
Kamenev needs some top 6 time with the Eagles. Greer has earned a shot.
Kerfoot is a top 6 guy. Play him with Jost and Compher. Grit your teeth thru the growing pains. It still a rebuilding year.

Kerfoot and Kamenev have similar stat lines tonight yet Kerfoot is a C and Kamenev an F? Kamenev even had 2 shot attempts and a hit while Kerfoot had 0’s and 33% in face-offs tonight. I love you AD but this one feels harsh. Plus they equally seemed at fault on the 6th goal

Shouldn’t Kerfoot be more accountable then? He’s the better player

Cole was brutal. I don’t understand a B for him. On a different note, thank you for being one of the only people that realizes that MacKinnon is lazy and disinterested in his own zone 99% of the time. Remember when he attacked the middle of the ice? Good times, good times.

Cole had some uncharacteristic turnovers…. like the one on the last goal where he felt some contact and just kind of flubbed the puck right up the middle. I love the acquisition and what he brings to this team, but again… a B is a bit of a stretch.
It’s great to watch this team get rolling though and be able to score in bunches. The goalie interference call… wow… there’s protecting the goalies and then there’s playing hockey, no?

I have been complaining about the faceoff stats for two years. There is just no reason this team should be as bad as it is on faceoffs. As much as MacKinnon wants to be the best player on the ice why doesn’t he care about faceoffs? He has more or less said he does not.
Nemeth’s penalty was the turning point in the game.
I thought the Kamanev Bourque Kefoot line was actually our best line early in the game.
We were due for a game where we either stunk or didn’t get any breaks. Tonight it was a little of both.

Cole was terrible in the third. Absolutely no way he deserved a B.

What was the time split of Bourque w/Kamenev and Kerfoot? It does either of them zero good to play with him. No knock on Bourque but right now w/the PK being so mediocre at best time to give Greer a real shot and playing him with young talented guys like the K’s might just be what he needs in the NHL.

That’s generous if you’re grading for even-handedness. More like F-. I’m still just trying to get over the insanity in Detroit and this Pens game didn’t help. The refs may as well just wear the opposing team’s jersey, cuz they do NOT like the Avs. That goes for the goblins and gremlins in the “situation room” as well.

Soderbergh did clip the goalie w/an elbow which in today’s game is going to be called…also, I thought for sure EJ would get penalized on the Steen hit but it didn’t happen…in the end the calls even out especially for teams with superstars like Rantanen and McKinnon who will get more calls for than against.
Hey guys…we have the most exciting team in the league which is pushing for the top spot in the West…they are going to have off nights and the Pittsburgh game was one of them
AD, how about calling them the “McLaran” line evoking that classic British sportscar?
