NASHVILLE, Tenn. – People forget, the great Peter Forsberg played for the Nashville Predators, in 2007. Who would have ever believed, though, that someone else with the last name of Forsberg would go down as the better Predator?
Filip Forsberg, the draft pick the Washington Capitals used in the first round in a trade from the Avalanche in 2011, then stupidly traded him to the Predators for not much in return, added to his Nashville legend in Game 1 of the Western Conference quarterfinals with the Avs Thursday night at Bridgestone Arena.
Forsberg’s two third-period goals were the difference in a 5-2 Predators win. They’ll take a 1-0 best-of-seven series lead into Game 2 Saturday.
The Avs played a very good game, definitely outplaying the heavily-favored Predators for good stretches. Some bad luck and timely goaltending by Pekka Rinne kept them from being rewarded in the end.
Case in point: J.T. Compher came within an inch of putting the Avs up 2-0 early in the second period. A shot of his from the right circle hit Rinne, bounced high in the air and into the crease, almost over the goal line. It stayed out, and Nashville’s Austin Watson scored on the ensuing Preds counterattack down the ice.
A 2-0 game went to 1-1 just like that, and it woke the SEC college-football-loud Preds crowd up.
The Avs, though, came right back to make it 2-1 on Blake Comeau’s tip of a Carl Soderberg shot. It was 2-1 Avs at 4:51.
Then, however, came an iffy slashing penalty on Nathan MacKinnon at 8:40 of the second. Ten seconds later, after Mark Barberio’s second failed clearout of his PK shift, Craig Smith took a Ryan Johansen pass alone in front and tied it back up.
Mikko Rantanen had a breakaway late in the second, but Rinne made a desperation toe save.
On to the third it went, 2-2, anybody’s game. The Avs probably should have had a lead, but a tie game entering the third on the road was just the kind of result they would have taken had it been presented before the game.
But it all went to heck in the third. Forsberg was the hero, with his toe-drag goal around Sam Girard the backbreaker of a goal, making it 4-2.
Game 2 is Saturday afternoon right here.

AuthorSigh…yes, this obviously wasn’t my sharpest fact-checked story of all time. Thanks

Avs deserved better out of that one. We could have had 3 or even 4 goals easy if it wasn’t for a bit of puck luck for Nash. It was close. Easily could have won.

Tough loss, they looked great for most of the game! Can’t really complain too much. I love the SEC reference to the Perds fans. Oh, and I remember Foppa as a member of the Perds, who knocked the Avs out of the playoffs with a game winning goal…

It’s tough when a game that played out as a road win for the Avalanche turns out the opposite way. Gonna be tough to play the Preds that tough 2-in-a-row. MacK should have scored on that 2-on-1. Rants on his defense split. Those guys are scorers – gotta score. I was happy that Barberio returned from injury and overall I think it’s positive, but the failed clear, wow, he had time and space – could have easily taken it the other way and shot it out of the zone. He really let his teammates down. But I guess that’s why a team like Nashville amasses 4 really talented D-Men. Guys like that are less apt to make those kind of mistakes.
Anyone think the Preds played dirt-er I mean “chippy”? Who thinks the Avs could play that way and get away with it? I don’t. Time to regroup boys!

Barberio was responsible for the second goal and had 2 penalties

Thanks. Time for him to pick up his game. Where’s Lindholm? If healthy I’d be inclined to give him a start. Siemens? He’s a big body for sure. Maybe he would thrive on rough and tumble playoff hockey.

Not to mention is several really bad icings.
I’m still puzzled how Bednar kept icing him after all of this though.

On the plus side it’s good to see the Avs come out and play good, solid playoff hockey. Beating the #1 seed after losing game 1 ain’t gonna be easy – but it can be done. All it can take is a turnaround game. The Preds could go into a slide and the Avs could surge. Strange things can happen. But sigh, I have to think a Varly-Rinne matchup would be much better.

That sure would have felt good to steal the first game. It was tantalizingly close going into the third but it was not meant to be. Still have a couple chances to steal one on the road.

On the plus side that goal by Forsberg on Girard should be one of the great learning experiences for the young defenseman that we were hoping for from these playoffs. Girard is young, smart and talented. At his age kids absorb those types of lessons like a sponge.
