I appreciate your grade of Varly after this game. I don’t remember exactly which game, but I argued that your grade of him was too low because neither of the goals that got past him he really could have stopped, so it was nice to see you give him a C+ this time instead of the D or D- you gave him the last time he had a similar game. Maybe the Nashville game? Don’t remember… lol

Found it, lol. It was the Nashville game, and you gave him a C. Would have still given him a B or B- instead of a C that game, but at least you gave him a C+ this time. Lol

The reason I’d give Varly a higher grade is because the guys in front of him were just so awful in the third. In the third, he needed to match Fleury’s first-period effort, but that’s a very tall order and doesn’t mean he only deserves an ‘average’ grade. Even if Varly had made one more save (and I agree he should have at least stopped either goal #2 or #3 by Vegas) it would not have mattered, because the Avs were only able to put 4 shots on goal that period. The skaters couldn’t finish (yet again) in the first and could even muster an offense in the third.

Varly ducked on the second goal. Hard to accept hard to believe. Goalies tend to react with their glove or blocker to shots like that but can’t remember when I’d seen an NHL goalie just yield.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who saw that. And I agree, I’ve never seen it before.

Pekka Rinne ducked Jake Guentzel’s shot in the cup finals last year.

If you refer to the goal in game one, Rinne’s movement looks a bit similar but the shot is not coming towards his head.

This stretch of tough games shows just how reliant this team is on the top line, if they don’t produce they are going to struggle to win. At the very least down these final games would like to see anybody emerge as a secondary scoring threat after the top line and Barrie. It would be a great time to see Jost show that he can be the 2C.
