Duncan Siemens must play in the NHL from Game 1 so he’s ready for the playoffs. Guenin, Holden, and Stuart need to be traded for extra pucks or moldering knee pads.

There is no question in my mind that Anton Stralman is the linchpin of the Lightning turn around. The fact they did the deal at 4.5 million is just amazing. He’s probably the greatest argument the advanced stats community has for why possession stats matter. The only reason he garnered such an outstanding contract as a UFA was the subtly of his numbers. A perfect pairing for their stud defenseman.

Erik Johnson needs his possession-strong left-handed partner. He’s always needed it. Even Hejda in his late twenties with CBJ didn’t represent the kind of player the top pairing needed. At 24 years of age and a consistent relative Corsi stud; Wiercioch is a modern day version of Stralman. Is he the first pairing panacea? Maybe not, but he could be. He could also hold court while the younger draftees find their NHL way. Does it have to be Wiercioch? No, but he and Stralman represent the modern day Detroit Red Wings who picked up Russians in the late 80s before other teams caught on. The advanced stats secret is out and the Stralmans’ of the league aren’t going to be bargains going forward.
