Seemed obvious to me he was being held back by the notorious “intangible”. The fact it is chemistry is huge – I think we all know how important that is to Super Joe and his roster.

I’m glad Super Joe is tuned in big time to chemistry and maturity (hopefully it applies to Naz too).
I’m also glad AJ tuned in to that factor for this article. These sre the kinds of things stats don’t reveal.

Sounds like AJ needs a competent sports psychologist. They’re around, other players have used them…

Kadri did 2 boneheaded things in the playoffs for sure, but everything I’ve read is that he is good in the locker room. When the Leafs signed JT he didn’t complain and took the 3C role even after a back to back 30 goal seasons.

Great stuff AJ! Loved that about the tattoo and investigation of people talking to his maturity issues.
About the waiver eligibility I’m really surprised. Sounds to me like he will start up in the NHL and if they’re unhappy with him, off he goes. Because someone will pick him up. Are you a 100% on the waiver thing?

He’s 100% waiver eligible. Him getting picked up is more of a question mark. Every organization has their own A.J. Greer to figure out so taking someone else’s is iffy territory

Along with the maturity issues, he definitely seems to have anger issues. Twice last year, he completely lost it on the ice. I don’t mean the usual flare-ups that happen during a game. I mean, he LOST IT. He was out of control, swinging at anybody who came near him. I honestly thought he was going to punch a ref at one point. It took three refs to wrestle him down and get him off the ice. It’s one of those things that’s laughed at in the lower leagues, but won’t really fly in the NHL.

Thanks so much for the great article! 🙂

This echo’s the pod a bit, but I have a tough time seeing AJ making the 23 man roster with all the available D. With the deal he just signed, I also would be surprised if he clears waivers. It looks like this is good by.

Now the the Avs have strengthened their player pool prospects like Greer, Kaut, etc. are going to find that if they want to play for the NHL team they are going to have to take their game to higher levels both on and off the ice. This is a good thing for the Avs and their fans.

AJ, it seems to say a lot that the AVS are concerned about Greer’s maturity and chemistry fit when he only gets 90k for the AHL and some of the other AHLers are getting 300-400k to play for the eagles. What say you? I like Greer’s grit and it seems like he would be a good bottom six guy, but if he is a pain in the arse in the locker room and a head case, probably good to say good bye.

I think they give guys big AHL money when they want then in the AHL and happy there, helping to win games and develop prospects. I think they didn’t give Greer big AHL money because they want him motivated to stay in the NHL even if he is getting low minutes.

Think he and Kamenev are just innocent victims of the team’s success. Would love to see both get the chance but Bednar doesn’t have much patience with Greer’s maturity issues and Kamenev is very good when available but he can’t stay healthy. And with the quality of the team’s prospect pipeline and Joe’s tinkering with the roster, the window of opportunity is limited.

Maybe package them up and send them east for draft picks …
