The Colorado Avalanche finished their NHL Draft off by making left wing Travis Barron of the Ottawa 67’s from the Ontario Hockey League the 191st overall selection.

Barron, 17, is 6’1″ and 187 pounds and was the third overall selection in the 2014 OHL Draft. He registered 13 goals, 24 assists for 37 points in 60 OHL games this past season.

Prospect Black Book:

“His defensive game is responsible, he understand systems and where to be on the ice in the defensive zone and what man to pick up. Travis is an effective penalty killer because he will block shots, get in lanes of the defenders and work hard along the boards to get the puck out. Travis is a character player and has shown good leadership on and off the ice. He sticks up for teammates on the ice and isn’t afraid to fight if needed. Travis could possibly be a good role player at the next level but he will need to focus on getting faster, stronger and competing hard every game and shift to be an effective player.”

From Future Considerations:

Barron is a gritty, two-way winger who is not afraid to do the heavy lifting on a scoring line. He’s not the most efficient skater as he holds his stick with two hands and practically rows his arm as he tries to hit top speed. He does generate some decent speed, but he could use another gear and better jump to get away from his check and to create some space on the rush. Barron takes his time with the puck and can dish soft passes, hitting his man with a leading pass with great timing. He shows that he can receive a pass at high speed in the neutral zone and continue on without losing his speed. He shows some skill with a quick little handle of the puck to pull it in and release a shot on net, maintaining solid accuracy and velocity on his shot in full flight.
