CHICAGO – The Colorado Avalanche used the 94th overall selection of the 2017 NHL Draft on right wing Nick Henry of the Regina Pats (WHL). Listed at 5’11’, 190 pounds, Henry put up an impressive season on a powerhouse Pats team, registering 81 points (35g, 46a) in 72 games.

Henry fills a hole for the Avalanche in the prospect pool as they had a glaring need at wing and after using their first two selections of the draft on defensemen, a forward was in order.

The Black Book has this to say about Henry:

Henry has very good awareness of where his teammates are on the ice. When he has time with the puck, he consistently makes smart decisions with his head up. He passes the puck hard and makes plays quickly. This makes him very effective on the powerplay as he can zip passes cross-ice to teammates at ease. He does
not tend to be a creative by beating defenseman but shows creativity and catches defenders off guard with his playmaking skills. He seldom held onto the puck for too long and understands his limitations and when he needs to either shoot or move the puck.

One of Nick’s best assets is his shooting ability. He has a great release and heavy shot that he makes him dangerous in most areas of the offensive zone. In addition, he likes to take advantage of his one-timer when he sees an opportunity to catch the goalie out of position. His shot is heavy both in stride and flat-footed from the half-wall, where he is usually is situated on the powerplay.
