In the wake of an uneventful trade deadline, Joe Sakic announced during his post-deadline press conference that the Avalanche would recall forward JT Compher from the San Antonio Rampage.

Acquired as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Ryan O’Reilly to the Buffalo Sabres, JT Compher has been a rising star in the Avalanche’s prospect pool. After his acquisition at the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Compher had his best NCAA season, earning NCAA B1G All Star honors, a spot as a Hobey Baker Finalist a trip to the World Championships, and finally, an NHL contract with the Avalanche.

In his first pro season, Compher has put up quality numbers with the Rampage, scoring 13 goals and 30 points in his first 41 games. Compher ranks 3rd on the team in scoring, despite missing 14 games to injury earlier in the year.

Compher’s quality AHL play has justified a call up at some point this season, and with Jarome Iginla headed to the Los Angeles Kings, the Avalanche finally found themselves with an available roster spot to spend on the rookie. Compher along with the Avs’ lone trade deadline acquisition, Sven Andrighetto, should bring some hunger, speed and skill to an NHL roster that needs to finish strong and lay groundwork for a better season next year.
