Happy New Year, let’s get to Avalanche player grades from tonight’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Kings:
Tyson Jost (D+) – I want to be nice, I want to give A’s to everyone, but my job is to tell it like I see it, and I just didn’t see much again from No. 17. When I taught public school a few years ago, I would tell kids “You’re the one who gave yourself the grade, not me.”
His first game as left wing on a line with Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen was not full of many highlights. His one big scoring chance in the game – a chance in front, all alone – he tried to settle the puck, when he should have just snapped off a little one-timer. The puck was stripped away because of that little hesitation. No doubt, he’s squeezing the stick really hard right now. He had no points and no shots on net.
Nathan MacKinnon (B) – I thought he showed some heart and toughness in the latter half of the game, a leading man in the comeback that salvaged a point, at least. He scored a goal after a nice crossing pass from Rantanen and was robbed on another one-timer earlier, by Jonathan Quick. Is it too much to ask for him to win a faceoff to start overtimes once in a while, though?
