Around the Herd 7/7/15: Shouting from the Rooftop

Rooftoppin’

The University of Colorado released passes for season ticket holders Tuesday morning to their “Rooftop Terrace,” a beer garden that sits atop the Champions center, with beautiful views of the Flatirons. As expected, the passes went like hotcakes.

The allotment of season passes, which went for an extremely reasonable $60, sold out in minutes, and by 4 PM all 750 tickets, including the $15 single-game passes, available for each game were completely sold out.

CU will release 100 more passes per game to the general public tomorrow.

This simple idea is yet another stroke of genius from athletic director Rick George. George, who has been instituting the novel idea of listening to the fans and responding accordingly, brought beer back into Folsom last year, and now he has added a beer garden that will have a great view of the game, solving one of the big issues people had with the gardens that were available last year.

This thing is already going to be a gosh darn money printer. Charge people ten to 15 bucks to get up there and then watch as they drop another 50 to 100 on drinks and food, but I predict it will become even more of a cash cow after this season. People will start to realize this is the place to be in Folsom Field, and all the sudden, that $60 season pass goes up dramatically in price.

Sure there is somebody out there who is going to say that this is ridiculous and Colorado Football should be enjoyed from your bleacher seat, and I am in full support of that, but this is 2015 and sporting events, especially when the team is… less than elite, have become social events. People, outside of the diehards, want to go to the game, but what they really want to do is drink with their friends on a Saturday afternoon, so if they want to pay a $50 cover charge, another $10 to get up onto the exclusive rooftop, and then put a day’s worth of drinks on their tab, you have to take advantage of that.

#BangBangBelgium

The FIBA U20 European Basketball Championship has officially kicked off, and that means Colorado Basketball signee, Thomas Akyazili is in action with his Belgian teammates.

Today, the Belgians took on Bosnia and Herzegovina, and ended up taking the game by a score of 59-51.

Akyazili finished the game with five points, three rebounds, and one assist, in limited action. The 18-year old, who is the youngest player on his team, and was the youngest player on the floor today, didn’t see more then a few minutes in the second half, as he looked to be battling cramps on the sideline.

In the time that he was on the floor, Akyazili showed a nice skill set. He has an eye for creating for his teammates, and made creative yet accurate passes for them on the day. He had a nice catch and shoot three from the corner, where he seems to be most confident from distance. Finally, while he missed a couple finishes, he showed some quickness getting to the rim.

Akyazili can be a contributor for the Buffs right away, his ability to create will be valuable to the team. The question will be, can his teammates make the shots?

Sprucin’ up the Maxwell Watch List

The watch list for the 79th annual Maxwell Award, given to “America’s top college player,” came out this morning, and Colorado’s Nelson Spruce is joined by 79 of the other top players in the nation on the list.

Of course and 80-man list is pretty long, but it doesn’t make it any less special for Spruce to be mentioned in the same sentence as the award.

On the surface it would seem that Spruce is in for a bit of a down year, with teams knowing before the season that he is the receiver to key in on against the Buffaloes, but the Buffaloes corps could be stronger as a whole this season. if players like Devin Ross, who is getting a lot of hype this offseason, can live up to the bill, Spruce may get more single coverage than we expect this season. If that’s the case, Spruce may be on this list for a while.

Tweet of the day

Maybe he’s got a leg?
