With less than a month until the season opener against Washington State, Colorado State Football will begin fall camp on Friday morning.
Coming off a 3-9 campaign, the hope is that the Rams will be able to make great strides in 2023, especially with the depth being significantly better on both sides of the ball.
While there is reason for optimism given the state of the roster, one of the big questions surrounding the team is whether or not running back Avery Morrow will be able to participate this season.
Morrow was suspended from all team activities in January after being arrested and charged with felony second-degree assault for a physical altercation with another student away from campus. As things currently stand, Morrow is still going through the legal process, but he is able to participate in some team activities.
According to a statement from a CSU representative, Morrow was allowed to rejoin the team this summer and will be able to practice with the team this fall. He is not however currently eligible to participate in games or media activities. Here is the statement from CSU in its entirety:
“Following his suspension from team activities in January, Avery Morrow has been allowed to return to team activities over the summer and is eligible to practice with the team this fall. At this time, Avery is ineligible to participate in games or media activities. We are unable to comment on pending legal matters. Any changes to that status will be communicated at a later date.”
After transferring over from Nevada, Morrow led CSU in rushing in 2022 with 866 yards on 173 carries. Despite playing behind a patchwork offensive line, Morrow was one of the most productive backs in the Mountain West, finishing third in rushing production against league opponents (765 yards).
Obviously we will have to wait and see how the legal process plays out but if Morrow is unable to play in any games this season it would definitely be a blow to the team. The silver lining of course is that the Rams brought in North Dakota State transfer Kobe Johnson this summer. And he should be a reliable starting running back for the Green & Gold this fall.
