The Colorado football team is 2-0 for the first time since 2023.
There’s still a long way to go and plenty of room for improvement, but the Buffs’ 52-21 win over Weber State in Week 2 provided glimpses of what they can be. The passing game came alive and a few defenders emerged for Coach Prime.
Here’s a look at five Colorado football players who broke out in Week 2 vs. Weber State:
QB Julian Lewis
Julian Lewis had a career day in Week 2, throwing TDs on two of his first three pass attempts. The second-year QB finished the day completing 74% of his passes (17-of-23) for 366 yards (career high) and five total TDs (four passing, one rushing).
Lewis missed a few opportunities for big plays in Week 1 but he straightened that out on Saturday. On deep throws (20-plus yards downfield), he completed three of five attempts for 146 yards and three TDs. He was even better on play-action passes (80% completion, 348 yards, four TDs) which should become a staple of the Colorado football team’s offense this fall.
WR Joseph Williams
Williams was the biggest beneficiary of Lewis’ career day, catching all four of his targets for a game-high 123 yards and two TDs. The junior WR’s first TD of the day showcased his toughness and elite acceleration, shrugging off a tackler before outrunning the Weber State defense for a 63-yard score.
His second TD of Week 2 put his rare athleticism on display as he skied to catch a 32-yard TD pass. Williams has arguably been the Colorado football team’s most consistent WR through two games and his rapport with Julian Lewis is evident.
DB Jah Jah Boyd
Boyd was the Colorado football team’s highest-graded player (92.6) in Week 2, according to Pro Football Focus. The Indiana transfer led the Buffs in total tackles (eight) and solo tackles (five) while also forcing a fumble vs. Weber State. His snap count jumped from 17 to 31 and he should continue to see even more playing time in a secondary that’s looking for another reliable option.
“Jah Jah is the kind of kid who plays with passion and practices with passion,” Deion Sanders said of Boyd postgame. “Sometimes he goes a little too far but you can count on him to give everything he has. He’s very emotional but he plays with that and I love that about him. I don’t want him to change a thing.”
CB Jason Stokes Jr.
An opportunity presented itself to Stokes Jr. and he ran with it. With starting nickel/slot corner Makari Vickers struggling for the second consecutive week (allowed 90 yards and a TD on four targets vs. Weber State), Coach Prime replaced him with Boo Carter. That put Stokes Jr. on the field in place of Carter at cornerback and the Utah transfer looked the part.
After playing just three snaps in the season opener, Stokes Jr. had three PBUs and two tackles in Week 2. His performance could make him the Colorado football team’s starting cornerback moving forward opposite of Cree Thomas with Boo Carter sticking at nickel/slot.
“He was ready,” Deion Sanders said of Stokes Jr. postgame. “He didn’t back down and he was working his game, understanding down and distance, situational type of football. He did a great job. He wasn’t afraid of the moment.”
DE Toby Anene
Anene came so close to a pair of sacks in the season opener but got his first as a Buff in Week 2. The North Dakota State transfer was the Colorado football team’s second-highest graded player (92.0) vs. Weber State thanks to his strip-sack forced fumble and batted pass. While much of the attention from opposing offenses will be on Lamont Lester Jr. (and rightfully so with his four sacks), Anene could begin to break out.
