Dewey Young is arguably Colorado’s biggest recruiting win of the offseason.
The four-star offensive lineman committed to the Buffs on Monday, choosing Deion Sanders’ program over Georgia, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt and others. Young is a top-10 player in the state of Michigan and becomes Colorado’s highest-ranked recruit in the 2027 class.
The blue-chip OL from Kalamazoo High School is a multi-sport athlete (baseball) with a family full of athletes. His father, Duane, was a first-team All-Big Ten tight end (1990) who was a fifth-round pick in the 1991 NFL Draft and a six-year NFL veteran. Dewey’s brother, DJ, was a second-team All-Big Ten offensive lineman (2010) who spent the 2011 NFL season with the Arizona Cardinals.
“Physical, broad-torsoed offensive lineman who could potentially provide roster value at multiple positions,” 247Sports’ scouting analyst Gabe Brooks said of Dewey Young. “Experienced on the outside, but higher long-term ceiling could be inside. Strong football pedigree with multiple NFL immediate family members.
“Hallmarks are stopping power and phone booth strength. Moves bodies off the line of scrimmage. Run-game mauler who will finish blocks to the ground. P4-caliber offensive lineman who could become a reliable high-major starter with long-term pro potential.”
Colorado football fans (and critics) have been clamoring for the Buffs to prioritize the trenches in recruiting. Prospects like Dewey Young are exactly what Colorado needs to take the next step as a program.
Dewey Young is the Buffs’ 20th commit and fifth OL commit in the 2027 class, joining fellow four-star Li’Marcus Jones (former Ole Miss commit), Coderro McDaniel (Ole Miss flip), Zaquan Linton (former Miami commit) and Jayin Talib.
Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders recently posted on Twitter/X, “20! Maybe 21! That’s it,” seemingly hinting at how many signees Colorado is planning to end up with.
If that’s truly the case, the Buffs may turn their attention away from uncommitted recruits and simply focus on retaining their 2027 class. And if Colorado’s 2027 haul remains at 20 (or 21) players, it will undoubtedly be the best of the Coach Prime era.
