UPDATE: June 17, 2018 at 3:36 p.m. — Monday’s pre-draft workout has been canceled, the team announced.
Mitchell Robinson, a seven-foot center and former McDonald’s All-American, will work out for the Nuggets Monday morning, the team announced. Monday’s solo audition is likely the team’s final pre-draft workout of the offseason.
Robinson, 20, enrolled at Western Kentucky University last season but never played a game for coach Rick Stansbury and the Hilltoppers. The Pensacola, Florida native was on campus for the school’s summer semester and practiced with the team for a few weeks before he left the university and was later suspended for a violation of team rules. Robinson then asked for and was granted a release to transfer from the school.
A former Rivals Top-10 recruit, Robinson is a big man fit for the modern NBA. He’s a skilled shot blocker and dangerous lob threat around the basket. Immediately, Robinson would be considered one of best athletes at the center position in the NBA. Scouts seem unsure as to what other aspects of his game Robinson will develop throughout his career.
Stocked at center with starter Nikola Jokic and backup Mason Plumlee, who is under contract for two more seasons, Denver doesn’t have a need in the frontcourt. But Robinson is likely a long-term play for whichever team selects him.
Denver’s other solo workout of the pre-draft process featured Texas A&M big man Robert Williams — a projected late-lottery pick.
The Nuggets currently hold the 14th, 43rd and 58th overall selections in Thursday’s NBA Draft.
