Rockies one-hit by Jordan Lyles

The Colorado Rockies were on the verge of making all kinds of dubious history. Not only have the San Diego Padres never had a no-hitter, or perfect game, in their team’s history, starting pitcher Jordan Lyles has struggled for most of his career—much of that with the Rockies—and had never won a game at Petco Park.

They managed to avoid the big ones and even managed to make it interesting late but ultimately fell in a 4-0 loss in which they were dominated by one of the worst pitchers in their own franchise history.

It was the 29th one-hitter in Padres history.

Trevor Story finally broke up the perfecto with one out in the eighth, taking a well-located fastball away from him and lining it into left field for a single. Pat Valaika followed with a walk that prompted the Padres to go to Brand Hand. Charlie Blackmon came on to pinch-hit, searching for the first left-on-left hit against Hand all season, but he settled for drawing a walk to load the bases.

The Rockies went with their second-straight pinch-hitter Ian Desmond who hit a hard line drive to center field that was caught for the final out, leaving the bases loaded.

German Marquez continues to struggle in the first inning, giving up a lead-off single to Tavis Grankowski followed immediately by a two-run home run off the bat of Eric Hosmer.

He did give up a few more baserunners over the next few innings but danced out of trouble each time, getting better as the game went on and never allowing another run. His elevated pitch count meant Chris Rusin needed to come on in the sixth and his tough year continued with a two-run homer given up to Christian Villanueva.

Those two homers and the Rockies inability to take advantage of their only rally in the eighth ended up being the difference in the game.

Colorado falls to 23-20.

What’s Next:

After an off day, the Rockies start a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Chad Bettis will face off against Jeff Samardzija in the first game. First pitch is at 8:15 Mountain Time.
