Something we’ve wanted to do a bit more of, now that we are in this premium format, is simply sharing some thoughts or feelings we have on the team or a player.
It may not be enough to warrant a full-fledged story or column, but it’s something that, hopefully, you guys will find interesting. With the community feel that we have around here these days, it seems natural to just let this stuff flow.
Without further ado, here are a few thoughts on Case Keenum that have been on my mind lately:
Calmer, cooler and more collected
Guys, when I tell you this guy was calm, cool and collected on Friday, I mean he made Trevor Siemian seem high strung.
These introductory press conferences usually have a very buttoned-up nature to them, but Keenum’s couldn’t have been any more opposite. He was bouncing around talking to media members, cracking jokes on the radio and TV and just looking extremely comfortable all around. You can see why he’s so unbothered by the idea of the Broncos drafting a quarterback at No. 5 and why people say the moment won’t be too big for him.
For some reason, the whole time I just kept thinking about Gary Kubiak’s quote at his final press conference as a head coach, something along the lines of, “I came in this league wearing jeans, I’m going out wearing jeans.” Keenum seems like a real in-and-out-wearing-jeans guy. It’s no wonder at all that he a Kubes have such a great relationship, the pair of Texas QBs remind me of each other.
Text I got from a Broncos WR
“I’m hyped AF about Case.”
If you don’t know what “AF” means… Google it.
Nice to see a little bit of excitement in the building over Keenum coming in the fold.
Family man
This was pointed out by Zac on Twitter, but whenever Case talked about anything regarding his career, the move to Denver, plans for the future, etc., he always used “we” instead of “I,” with the second half of “we” being his wife.
At the very least, that’s a smart man.
If you watched the “Hard Knocks” with the Rams a couple years back, though, you’d see that Case and Kim Keenum really are a team. On the show, Kim was famous for quizzing Case on the playbook to get him ready during training camp.
Zac and I actually had a nice conversation with Kim on Friday. It sounds like they really imagine Denver being a destination rather than just another stop on their journey.
(Side note: I was curious to find out how invasive the Hard Knocks thing really was and she said she really didn’t mind it much.)
Dimes, dimes everywhere
Maybe it’s because I’ve been deprived of watching good quarterback play for two years in Denver, but when I briefly turned on the tape to get a better idea of the quarterback Keenum is, I was blown away by the number of perfect balls he threw.
No, he’s not a perfect QB by any means, but Keenum really opened things up for the Vikings offense last season by just hitting the occasional big throw, something the Broncos’ offense has been missing dearly the last two years.
When the strength of your team is the defense, much like it has been for Broncos the last couple years (and the Vikings last year), that big-time throw can often be all you need.
Some misconceptions floating around
I’ve seen many people talking about how Keenum was a product of great protection in Minnesota, and he won’t get that here. False.
Keenum’s line was actually the beneficiary of Keenum making them look better as he posted the best passer rating in the entire NFL outside of the pocket. He certainly wasn’t standing clean in the pocket.
Sidenote: Watch the footwork on this throw.
And, finally, Brock Osweiler is not a member of the Broncos anymore, he is a free agent.
Well, that’s what’s on my mind, what’s on yours? Let’s keep the conversation going in the comments.

“…he made Trevor Siemian seem high strung.” Now that’s funny……!

AuthorHaha no joke dude, he was so relaxed and comfortable. It was crazy.

I wasnt thrilled at first but now with all i am reading and watching from Case i am more and more sold on the guy, i admit i didnt know anything about him. I am even hoping the broncos dont draft a qb with the 5th pick
Ryan Koenigsberg
AuthorI think he has a chance to really thrive here if the fans can learn to accept less than John Elway or Peyton Manning haha
Spacebar
WHAT!!!!! Accept less. Humbug. But seriously. We could have done worst. I think it was the correct move for the team as a whole and definitely as a business. With the way things are shaping up for the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Broncos did skip on a QB and try for some best player available or O-line talent.

I agree – I honestly can’t say I *ever* followed anything he did until last year lol. To me, he’s kind of like a clean slate and now that we know we aren’t breaking the bank to have him I’m all for #4 (though seeing that number will take some getting used to)

I’m just having a hard time getting behind this guy! I’ve been listening to the podcasts and watching vids/analysts of this guy and I’m still doubtful! I just don’t feel comfortable giving this guy the keys to our franchise and saying “we’ve got our guy”! This guy has had 6 average years and one great year in the league and I’m supposed to believe that, since he’s in Denver there will be another great year?!? I would really feel better about this move IF, we draft a QB at 5 (preferably Mayfield, I wouldn’t be at Rosen either). I’m gonna to support the guy because he’s in the orange and blue just having a hard time believing in him as “OUR GUY”.

I’m right there with you. The guys have brought me more into Keenum than I was a few weeks ago, but I still don’t see this as a great move. But I definitely agree that the Broncos could have done a lot worse by missing out in Keenum in free agency AND missing a QB in the draft without paying an arm AND a leg to move up to the top 3 spots.

AuthorThere are definitely question marks surrounding Case and you don’t just have to be blind to them, but that’s why the contract structure is a very positive thing for the team.
A two-year deal doesn’t force you to make him your guy. You haven’t fully hitched your wagon to him. If he’s the player from those first five years, there is a pretty safe exit plan.

Ohh… I’m soo interested in what player it was that was “hyped AF” haha! As a fan I would love to see Broncos in hard knocks, see how Case and Vance handles the team. I just hope we get 2017 Keenum and not pre2017 Keenum 😀
Spacebar
HardKnocks would be interesting from a fans perspective, but I don’t think it is great from an organizational perspective. If I were the owner, gm, or head coach, I don’t believe I would want everything that is going on in my organization open to the “public” good or bad.

I mentioned it on the podcast comments, but I will also say it here as well since it deals with the “notebook” concept from Ryan. Could you creat a link in the Broncos menu list that will open a notebook section for all the subscribers and staff to chat instead of having to come and scroll for this particular article as it goes down as more and more articles are written.
Ryan Koenigsberg
AuthorThat’s a great idea and actually a good opportunity to let you guys know that we are actually currently working on adding a forum-style aspect to the website which I’m REALLY excited about. I don’t have an exact timeline on it right now but definitely something to look forward to in the future!

I love to see that Keenum is a family man, it really shows a lot about his character and loyalty.

I’m not really clued up on the college game as I’m in the UK and can’t really justify subscription to NCAA too, but what do the next two years of QBs look like and/or any free agents coming up in two years?
It seems to me that if there aren’t any prospects, must take a QB and Mayfield has most in common with Keenum to maintain same system.
If we choose not to go QB and no obvious players on the horizon, then I think a playoff appearance should be enough to extend Keenum up to 5 years.
Loving the podcasts and loving the articles – keep up the good work!
