Why the sudden shift to starting McMahon in the minors Drew? Is this your speculation, or based on rumblings you’re hearing from the coaching staff?

This is based on comments coming from the team, none of them concrete by any means, it could just be a motivational tool. But it seems they are softening the ground for McMahon to at least start the year in the minors. It also makes sense if they feel either Tapia or Dahl are a bit more polished right now.

Desmond slots in at 1B and one of those guys gets everyday ABs while RyMac gets a little extra seasoning at this positions, waiting in the wings until either Dahl, Tapia, or Desmond falters.

This is starting to smell like an excuse to trust Desmond and Parra (veterans, more $$) over Dahl, Tapia, and McMahon (higher ceiling guys, less $$). I think it’s familiar and comfortable, but we’re leaving wins on the table in that scenario. At some point, Black and Bridich have to let the prospects become pros.

Is RyMac’s defense any worse than Desi’s? Or does that even matter if the focus is on helping McMahon be the best version of himself?
Is this “brake pumping” at all a side-effect, intended or not, of having CarGo back in the fold?

Great question!

At this point, RyMac’s defense at first is probably better than Desi’s, you’re right, but you’re also right that the focus is on getting McMahon to be the best version of himself in the long term. Especially at second base where he is showing signs of really good defense but moments where he looks lost.

And it might be a chicken or the egg situation when it comes to CarGo as a factor. Did getting CarGo necessitate some pumping of the breaks on the youngsters, or did the desire to pump some breaks lead to the signing of CarGo?

As you have discussed, signing CarGo is probably more of a clubhouse move, as he is a mentor for many. Having a few more veterans on the team sounds good to me. Having Dahl and McMahon in AAA makes complete sense. Will only make them work that much harder to get to the Bigs. Someone will get injured and the kids will be up sooner than later.
