What is really over is our expectation. I haven’t thrown in the towel yet. The next ten games or so will tell us a lot about this team. I have hope that they will break even on the road over the next few games and finish the season on a positive note. Last night there were a lot of tight grips on the Avalanche sticks.

Also this stretch has proved that the Avs are a shallow team in established talent. Guys like Wilson (wth $4M/yr 4th line player), Yakupov (oh the tease), Nieto, Toninato, Bourque, and Greer (what at all has he shown at the NHL level to indicate he is a top 6 forward) have shown they are 4th line or worse players. Yes there is potential there with Jost and Compher and Kerfoot (clearly a middle 6 not top 6 forward), but is there really any confidence that anybody not named GNR is capable of playing sustained stretch of games on the ‘1st’ line? Don’t despair just remember what the actual expectations were at the start of the year.

The plan for this year was to let the young guys play and “grow up together” – this stuff is to be expected. We knew the depth wasn’t there. But, for once in a long time, we know that it is on the way. Patience is warranted here.

With 30 games remaining the Avs needed to go 6-3-1 in each 10 game stretch to get to 101 points (which should be in the playoffs, but who knows in the Central). OK, they looked bad in one of the three losses for this 10 game stretch, but it is only 1 game. As long as they can manage 5 points in the next three games against teams that are out of the playoffs (Carolina, Buffalo, and Montreal) they should still be in the race when MacKinnon returns. On the other hand, if they continue this stretch of below average play, they should have a better idea of who the team is before the trade deadline. If they are out of it, I would rather get passed by a few teams and pick 10th (or so) then just missing the playoffs and picking 15th.

This is just a rocky stretch. I believe the boys will figure things out!

I’m not at all worried about the Avs making/missing the playoffs because the playoffs for them wasn’t even on my radar before the season started. I think the 10 game tear the Avs went on was something of an aberration. I believe the Avs’ true game-to-game performance level is somewhere just a bit above mid-pack play right now.

But since the team has gotten itself into the playoff conversation, an interesting question has come to mind:
I’m wondering if it would be ‘better” learning experience/motivator for the team to squeak into the dance and get bounced earlier or just miss getting in.

I believe it would be good for the team to get in to the playoffs because I don’t think that the difference between picking 16-19 and picking 13-15 would be that big. Making the playoffs would raise expectations for next year.
That being said, I still want Sakic to look to move pending UFA pieces (other than Bernier).

Meh. Not even worried about this year. I would like them to be sellers at the TDL, but regardless, this season has already been a success IMO.

The negativity was prophetic. Living in northern Alberta, I absolutely hate the Edmonton Oilers as an abs fan, and seeing them lose like this at home with the McDavid hat trick and the oilers snapping a 6 game skid I wanna puke my fucking guts out.
