No, Brock Osweiler did not expect to get the starting nod against the Bears. BSN Denver asked him that question on Sunday night and he said, “You know, I don’t (expect to be the starter). Peyton is our quarterback.” He even took it a step further and said, “I can speak for everyone in the locker room and say that we all support him 100%. He’s been one hell of a leader and a football player for this team for a lot of years, so I stand 100% behind him and do not expect to be the starter.”
Fast forward to this Monday and things have changed. When Brock Osweiler learned that he had been named the starter against the Chicago Bears, he was surprised. “It takes you a little bit by surprise. Peyton has been the starter for this team for a number of years now, ever since I’ve been here. To hear Coach Kubiak say, ‘Hey Brock, you’re going to start this week at Chicago’ in front of the whole team, yeah, it’s a little abnormal.”
We already know that the receivers stand behind Brock, but according to the young signal caller, he is getting a lot of support from the rest of the team as well. “My teammates have been tremendous. Everybody is very supportive. I’ve had multiple guys come up and say, ‘Hey, we’re going to fight for you. We believe in you.’ To have that support from my teammates, that really means a lot.”
After the Chiefs game Osweiler said, “I think there’s nothing that replaces game reps and I feel like tonight I got a lot of live game reps against a very good defense.” Little did he know that not only would the game reps continue but that his next set would come against a coaching staff that knows him pretty well, as the Broncos face a red hot Bears team coached by John Fox.
Osweiler told the media,”Obviously, they are coached very well. Yeah, Coach Fox knows a lot about us, but we also know a lot about him. I think it’s going to be a great football game that’s going to take the entire team to go into Chicago and get a win this weekend.”
As for the future beyond Chicago, Brock says it’s still Peyton’s show. “First of all, it’s very exciting, but at the same time, Peyton is still our guy. He’s one of the best to ever do it. He’s been extremely supportive of me since day one. He’s taught me so many things, so I’m going to continue to support him. I’m the starter for this week at Chicago, but that’s all it is.”
The Osweiler-lead Broncos will face the Bears in Chicago at 11:00 A.M. MT on Sunday.
