After practice today, Avalanche head coach Patrick Roy announced that Semyon Varlamov is out with a groin injury suffered this morning. He will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis. As a result, San Antonio Rampage goaltender Calvin Pickard has been recalled and will join the Avalanche on the current road trip.

Pickard has been stellar in the AHL this season, posting a .935 save percentage and 2.27 goals against average in 9 games (6-0-3). He was named the AHL goaltender of the month for October, as well. Last season, the 23-year-old played 16 games for the Avalanche, coming away with a 6-7-3 record, .932 save percentage, and 2.35 goals against average. Pickard is expected to serve as Reto Berra‘s back up, depending on how long Varlamov is out.

The Rampage play tonight against the Texas Stars, so goaltender coach Jean-Ian Filiatrault has been signed to a PTO in order to meet the league requirement for having a back up goaltender on the bench. Spencer Martin has been recalled from the Ft. Wayne Komets, but he is not expected to make it in time for the game.
