Vernon Davis was all smiles on Wednesday when he talked with the Denver media for the first time since being traded from the San Francisco 49ers at the trade deadline.
“Last night I was laying in my bed and I couldn’t sleep,” Davis explained. “I was thinking, ‘This is Kubiak, Peyton. I can’t wait.’ You can feel the energy as soon as you walk in the building.”
Davis left a toxic situation in San Francisco, a team full of changes and one undergoing in Davis’ words, “turmoil” in the locker room. Davis hasn’t been the same Pro Bowl caliber player that he was in 2013, but he thinks that is mainly to do with the problems his former team faced, not himself losing a step.
“Where did I go? Look at them (San Francisco) when I started to drop off,” the tight end said. “If the team doesn’t have success, I’m not going to have success. It’s tough to play with a team where you don’t have everything you need.”
A change of scenery might be just what the doctor ordered for Davis and he is extremely excited about the opportunity in front of him.

Davis also told the media that he felt like a rookie again and he was running around like a chicken with his head cut off when he heard about the trade. It isn’t clear how soon the veteran tight end will be able to adapt to his new surroundings, but changes can do wonders, especially for a player who has been dreaming about playing with Peyton Manning his whole career.
Manning isn’t only a phenomenal quarterback, he’s sensational at helping players reach their potential. In his ninth season and first with the Broncos — with Peyton Manning throwing him the football — Wes Welker set a career-high with 10 receiving touchdowns. Last year, Emmanuel Sanders destroyed his previous career-highs in receptions (101), yards (1,404) and touchdowns (9). Even Demaryius Thomas has seen his numbers explode with Manning tossing him the pigskin; the same could happen with Davis.
