Gary Kubiak held his weekly Monday presser this afternoon at Dove Valley and despite it’s obvious struggles, had some encouraging things to say about the offense.
Sunday was the first game of the season where the offensive line didn’t allow a sack. “I think its the best we’ve played this year up front,” Kubiak said. “A vast improvement. We haven’t arrived be any means, but a big step.”
The Broncos implemented a more offensive line by committee look vs the Browns, and it seemed to work. Max Garcia would fill in for the ailing Evan Mathis (hamstring) and Tyler Polumbus would spell Ryan Harris at times while Michael Schofield continues to get invaluable reps at right tackle.
Week 6 versus the Browns also featured for the first time this season a 100 yard rusher in Ronnie Hillman. Kubiak attributed the elevated play of the offensive line as well as the commitment to running to the new found success running the football.
The Broncos also added running back Kapri Bibbs to the active roster from the practice squad on Sunday, but Bibbs didn’t receive any carries. Kubiak was non committal to the idea of retaining Bibbs on the roster once Juwan Thompson is back healthy.
Still there is obviously work to be done on the offense, and Kubiak knows that. The bye week can often bring changes to scheme and personnel, but Kubiak isn’t going to make any drastic changes. Kubiak was asked if he would look to change his system to better accommodate Peyton Manning, but despite the poor results so far, as Manning leads the league in interceptions, Kubiak has and will always do what is best for his signal caller.

On the other side of the ball the Broncos are dealing with injuries to some of their top pass rushers. Shane Ray was carted off with a knee injury against the Browns but Kubiak sounds optimistic about his prognosis.

In Ray’s absence along with DeMarcus Ware nursing a back injury, the Broncos will continue to use Shaquil Barrett and Lerentee McCray with the possibility of Kenny Anunike at outside linebacker.
Lucky for the Broncos, they will have the bye week to lick their injured wounds and prepare for Aaron Rodgers and CO. when the Packers come to town on November 1st.
