Anytime a team loses a couple games in a row, the backup quarterback becomes the most popular guy in town. Now I can sit here all day and try to convince you guys that none of the backups are a better option than Sefo Liufau, but first, take it from his teammates.

Phillip Lindsay on Sefo Liufau:

“Sefo is our quarterback and that’s the leader of our offense. I have all the faith in the world in him. When Sefo’s out there it makes everybody feel more comfortable. Self needs to keep on doing what he’s doing and we need to continue to hold up for him, we need to take the hits off of him, he needs to stop getting hit so much.”

“Sefo is our man, Sefo is our guy and we’re going to stick with him until the end. This man is putting his body on the line for us every throw, you look on the ground and he’s grimacing because he got hit hard and that’s on us, that hurts to see your quarterback get hit like that. For a man to go out there and take hits like that, keep leading the team, have to look at the plays, give us the play calls, and manage all of that on top of the pressure and being hit, you have to give him all of the respect in the world. We’re going to keep riding for him just like he’s going to keep riding for us.”

Nelson Spruce on how much faith he has in Sefo Liufau:

“Oh a bunch, because he’s not the type of guy that is ever going to get down in these type of situations, he’s going to come back to work every week, he’s the leader of our team, everybody has a lot of trust in him.”

Derek McCartney on Sefo Liufau’s toughness:

“I look up to him, he’s one of the toughest guys on our team, I’d fight for him, die for him any day, he’s one of my best friends too.”

Mike MacIntyre on if he’s considered a change at quarterback

“No.”

Mike MacIntyre on how big the gap is between Sefo and his backups:

“He’s played a lot, he’s done well, he’s big, he’s strong, he’s competitive. I can’t say how big the gap is, but we feel like he’s better right now.”

As I stated on the BSN Buffs podcast this week, coaches put players on the field for one reason and one reason only – because those players give them the best chance to win. No matter his shortcomings, Sefo Liufau gives the Colorado Buffaloes the best chance every single week to leave the field with more points next to their name on the scoreboard – and it isn’t close.

It’s easy to look to the quarterback as the root of  a team’s problems, and while Liufau has certainly given fans lots of fodder for that assertion, it simply isn’t the case. If you want to be mad about something, be mad that the offensive line has been a sieve or be mad that Colorado hasn’t recruited a quarterback that is ready to unseat Sefo. Steven Montez may be that guy in the future, but you’re crazy if you want to burn his redshirt in week seven.

Sefo Liufau is this team’s quarterback for the foreseeable future. Don’t waste your energy.
