ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Have you ever been with a large group of friends and found it nearly impossible to get everybody on the same page? Now imagine trying to do that with a group of 53. That’s the struggle the NFL coaches deal with on a daily basis.
Broncos star linebacker Von Miller found this out the hard way on Thursday.
By now, you’ve probably seen the Broncos rendition of the latest internet craze “the mannequin challenge.” Well, during his meeting with the media on Thursday, DeMarcus Ware revealed that Von was the brains behind the operation, and during his meeting with the media, Miller shared some of the trials an tribulations of being the director of the show.
“Yup, that was me,” Von said of his role behind the camera. “There’s no way that you can organize 53 guys without somebody getting it together, but that was me. Unfortunately, we were a week late—about a week and a half late. I wanted to do it a whole lot earlier, but it turned out great. The people loved it.”
“It was about five takes,” Ware added. “One time [OLB] Shane [Ray] moved. One time the equipment guy came through. One time a guy came in and was like, ‘What are you guys doing?’”
In the end, the experience gave Von Miller a new respect for the men who are tasked with organizing the team every day.
“I said that from the get-go (laughs),” Miller explained. “They asked me, ‘Von, do you every see yourself coaching?’ And I’m like, you know what, I have a new found appreciation for all of our coaches because it’s hard to get 27-year-olds and 25-year-olds to listen right now (laughs). Listen to what we’re talking about, this is important, in four days we’re going to be tested on this stuff. Some guys—it’s just hard with some guys (laughs).”
“Some guys,” Miller concluded with a laugh. “it’s just hard with some guys.”
