Brock Osweiler opens up on "extremely disappointing" return to Denver

DENVER – Every athlete that’s bounced around in any league wants to go out and put on a show against their former team. Those feelings only get stronger when that team deemed you not worthy of the contract you received, or when that team decided you weren’t the one to lead their team into the playoffs.

But dreams are just that, dreams, and on Monday night, reality was far from that dream for Brock Osweiler.

The former Denver Broncos quarterback was fooled by a defense that capitalized on their knowledge of his inability to recognize disguised coverage, resulting in arguably the worst outing of his short career as a starter.

Osweiler completed just 22 0f his 41 attempts for a measly 131 yards, nearly setting the NFL record for fewest yards per completion by a passer who tossed the rock more than 40 times. The fifth-year QB was completely ineffective as his Texans were smashed by a count of 27-9.

“I would say just disappointment,” Osweiler described of his feelings after the game. “To go out there and have a performance that we did today is extremely disappointing. But I also think you need to give credit where credit is due. And the Broncos are a great football team they are very well coached. They came in playing all three phases today. That secondary and defensive line made it very tough for us to move the football offensively today. I think you need to tip your hat to them. We need to refocus and re-examine this tape extremely hard. We need to learn from it and get better.”

It was a game that has been marinating in hype since the second it was announced in the Summer, circled on the calendars of so many. Promos for the matchup solely focused on Brock versus the Broncos. Osweiler admitted afterward that he was glad it’s over.

“I think a part of me says yes,” he explained of whether he felt a sense of relief. “There was so much that was built up about myself and the Broncos and this game. At the end of the day, it was the Houston Texans versus the Denver Broncos. We came up here tonight, and we did not play a good enough football game to get this job done. But once again, give credit where credit is due. The Broncos are a great team. The crowd showed up tonight, and they’re very well coached. They came out, and they were ready to play for four quarters. We need to find a way to learn from this and get better.”

It wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies, though, as Brock to his chance to get a little jab back at the fanbase that has eviscerated him since he signed the dotted line in Houston.

“Definitely not surprised from the boos,” he said. “I assumed I would get a lot of boos and I thought it was going to be a little bit louder.”

Finally, Brock was asked if he has any regrets about that same decision he has been killed for in Denver.

“Absolutely not,” he concluded. “I always told people that I never live my life looking in the rear-view mirror with any regret. So absolutely not.”

It certainly was not the ideal return for Brock Osweiler on Monday night, but he’s got 37 million guaranteed reasons to avoid any lost sleep over leaving the night’s victorious team.
