Defensive player of the year? League MVP? No, Von Miller has his sights set elsewhere

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Von Miller is getting bored.

On Thursday afternoon, the AFC West Player of the Week referred to that honor as, “Just another day at work.” It makes sense for a Super Bowl MVP; there simply isn’t much left for Miller to prove. Sure he could go for league MVP as defensive coordinator Wade Phillips suggested Thursday, but that seems too simple for Von.

“If I got up here and I said some of the stuff that I expected out of myself, I’m sure it would shock all of you guys,” he began. “I just wouldn’t look right. My goals and my aspirations, I try to keep those to myself.”

After some poking and prodding, though, the man who is receiving what they call “quarterback money” revealed his true goal.

“I have one goal, one dream that I thought about the other day,” he explained. “What if I could play quarterback and rush the passer? You haven’t seen that. I come out to practice every day, throw 100 passes and try to be clean with my footwork.”

I mean, are you going to be the one to tell Von Miller he can’t do something? Don’t worry; someone else took care of it.

“I talked to [outside linebackers coach Fred Pagac], and I said, ‘Do you think—maybe do I have a shot?’ He just quickly disappointed me and said no.”

Like an NFL tackle, though, Pagac can’t stop Miller from getting to his destination, and judging by Phillips’ reaction, this isn’t the first time Von has brought the idea up.

“Yeah, I know. He’s said that before,” the legendary defensive coordinator said, annoyed as if he had just heard “why did the chicken cross the road, ” for the thousandth time.

“We really don’t want him on that other side of the ball, he’s doing pretty well where he is so I think we’ll keep him there.”

Miller often pulls inspiration from doubt. Maybe it’s his coaches not thinking he could do it or maybe it’s the fact that he’s tried to put himself in a QB in Madden only to find out he has a 19/100 throw power rating and a 6/100 throw accuracy rating, but he’s determined.

“I’d spread it all around,” he explained of his style under center. “I wouldn’t run the ball; I’m sure that’s what guys would think, that I’d drop back and try to scramble every play. No, no, no I’m gonna throw the ball up to DT and Emmanuel, Jeff Heuerman and all these guys. I would really spread it around.”

Sounds like he’s exactly the QB that Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders are looking for but just remember, Miller once said, “If you give [Tim] Tebow the arm of Peyton Manning, that’s probably the best quarterback that’s ever played the game.”

Maybe his ideas about the quarterback position should be taken with a grain of salt.
