DENVER — During today’s pre-game press conference with the media, when responding to a question from Jenny Cavnar of ROOT Sports, Colorado Rockies manager Walt Weiss revealed that the team intends to give the recently promoted 21-year-old right-hander German Marquez a game to start before season’s end.
“We’d like to see him get at least a start,” Weiss says, “We’re not sure exactly when.” He confirmed that the team would like to see how he responds to a multiple-inning task. “We’ve seen him in a relief role and in that’s he’s obviously out of his element but he’s handled it well. We’d like to give him a start or two.”
Marquez — the reigning Easter League Pitcher of the Year — posted a 2.85 ERA over 135.2 innings for Double-A Hartford earlier this year before a brief stint in Triple-A with the Isotopes. In his first 5.1 innings out of the bullpen in MLB, he has posted an ERA of 5.06.
Weiss went on to say that despite not believing that any of his young pitchers have hit a rookie wall, he does have a number of guys in the rotation in their first full seasons after serious injury including Tyler Anderson, Jeff Hoffman, and Tyler Chatwood coming off his second Tommy John surgery. And those players requiring some rest seems to have paved the way for Marquez.
“We for there to be a progression there from year-to-year until they get to the point where you can just let them go. But I haven’t necessarily seen them hit the wall yet.”
