Rockies beat Padres 3-2 in extras on historic home run from Mark Reynolds

Chad Bettis and Edwin Jackson were both tough to hit on Sunday afternoon, carrying dueling no-hit bids well into the game … and both ending up with a no-decision in a 3-2 win for the Colorado Rockies over the San Diego Padres.

Charlie Blackmon broke up Jackson’s shutout, no-hitter, and perfect game with one swing in the top of the fourth inning, absolutely hammering his 25th home run of the season and giving the Rockies a 1-0 lead.

Blackmon was right back at it again in the fifth, lining a two-out single that scored Nick Hundley who led off the inning with a double.

Bettis was on cruise control. Heading into the sixth inning, he had giving up only one single and hadn’t allowed a baserunner to reach second base. But on back-to-back pitches, Travis Jankowski and Wil Myers hit a double and triple respectively, breaking up the shutout. Then with one out, Myers’ hustle paid off when he scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Yangervis Solarte.

It had been nearly 15 innings since Bettis had given up a run and suddenly he had surrendered two and the game was tied. His final line in this one: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. His second straight stellar outing.

It looked for a moment liked the Padres were going to take the lead in the eighth when Jordan Lyles allowed two straight baserunners after getting two outs but a line drive from Hector Sanchez was caught by a leaping — and heavily shifted DJ LeMahieu — preserving the tie and ending the inning.

The score remained tied at two until the top of the tenth when Mark Reynolds hit the 250th home run of his career (13th of the season) to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead. Before that, the Rockies had not recorded a hit since the fifth inning.

Adam Ottavino came on in the bottom of the inning and immediately walked Jon Jay on four pitches, the exact opposite of what any pitcher wants in that situation. Jay advanced to second on a groundout from Jankowski but Ottavino struck out Myers looking and got Solarte to ground out to second to end the game with a Rockies win.

217 – Reynolds decisive home run in the tenth was the 250th of his career, he became only the 217th player in the long history of baseball to reach that total.

28 – DJ LeMahieu extended his career high on-base streak to 28 games.
