Rockies throttled by Padres 14-1

On a night when the Denver Broncos played their first game of the season, the Colorado Rockies did nothing to demand your attention, losing in embarrassing fashion to the San Diego Padres 14-1.

Starting pitcher Jeff Hoffman lasted just two and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs, though none of them were earned. All seven runs came in the third inning after a key error from Crithian Adames, though the three-run home run by Ryan Schimpf had very little to do with shoddy defense.

Hoffman struggled with his command from the get-go and would not make it through the third inning after throwing 84 pitches and giving up six hits and the seven unearned runs.

Recently promoted German Marquez replaced Hoffman, making his MLB debut. Unfortunately for the 21-year-old, he didn’t fare much better, also struggling with his command. Marquez walked three and gave up three earned runs on two hits over two and one-third innings.

Matt Carisiti had just as tough a night as the two men who preceded him, managing to record just one out but giving up two runs on three hits.

The nightmarish evening for Rockies pitching was capped off in the eighth inning when Christian Bergman surrendered a two-run home run to Derek Norris.

The Rockies were able to salvage a single run on a solo home run off the bat of Adames. The only other highlight of the game — in any sense really — was David Dahl’s three-hit night. But even that will seem like a distant memory next to the unmitigated beatdown that was this game.

Lasting Impact

Not much to say about a 13-run deficit. Hoffman has not looked good yet but neither did Jon Gray at this point last year. This was always going to be a building year for the Rockies but they made themselves tantalizingly close in their fans’ eyes.

This game wouldn’t be such a big deal if not for all the winnable ones that have been kicked away at the end in one fashion or another.
