Broncos add quarterback Austin Davis to complete 53-man roster

ENGLEWOOD, CO – Many believed that Paxton Lynch’s start in the fourth and final preseason game would help the Broncos decide if they could go into the season with just two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster. If that was the case, Paxton didn’t quite do enough.

On Saturday, the Denver Broncos announced the signing of former Cleveland Browns and St. Louis Rams quarterback Austin Davis.

Davis, who started a total of 10 games with the two teams over the past two seasons, has thrown for just over 2,500 yard in his three season in the NFL to go along with 12 touchdowns to nine interceptions.

At Southern Mississippi, 2,500 yards was a seemingly good couple weeks for Davis. The one-time walk-on threw for nearly 11,000 yards and 83 touchdowns in his college career, breaking many of Brett Favre’s records in the process.

John Elway was asked if the Broncos third quarterback was coming in to compete for the starting job:

“He’s coming in to learn the offense. We’ll take it one step at a time, let’s put it that way. Any time you bring in a guy this late it’s going to take time to get it turned around. Trevor’s is the guy, we have a lot of confidence in Trevor and we know that he can do the job. It’s Trevor’s job, he’s not going to be looking over his shoulder.”

Davis will join the team on Sunday.
